Tough going thru that kind of loss! There is sooo much to deal with, insurance helps a LOT!
We had a house fire, and I still think of things I lost...
Everyone (including me!) needs to take photos of everything in your home, every few years! Then store off site in case of catastrophic loss. ie: Open every drawer, door, wall, and closet! Including the garage, and out buildings.

Thankfully, I have no story. These kind of events are out of my league. Hard for me to imagine how hard the extremes are when I've never experienced them. Good to hear you were treated well in the remedy process and the important things (your lives ) were not part of the loss.

I live in Naples. Only screen damage from Irma and Ian. Lucky- so far. My insurance has doubled to $5k/yr. Flood is up to $800. If my mortgage rate wasn’t so low, we would have to sell.
With the way things are, there’s nowhere as cheap to go.

Florida is usually hit by hurricanes, we happen to be in their path. I remember Andrew, I think it was 1992 because it happened the same year my son got married. Andrew was a devastating hurricane and caused millions of dollars in cost to insurance companies. We do not find insurance companies that want to insure homes against hurricanes that often any more and when we do the deductible is $10,000 apart of the high cost of the insurance.

I have been through many hurricanes in my lifetime but Andrew was the worse. It had sustained winds of over 200 MPH with torrential amounts of rain. The devastation, especially in the area of the city of Homestead was of catastrophic proportions. There were many deaths and electrical services took longer than 4 weeks to resume service. I remember the chaos and I do not believe I will forget it.

Florida seems to attract hurricanes. You had serious losses but were fortunate enough that had good insurance coverage. I bet you are paying more now.

Hi Neighbor! I,too, went through Andrew and all that followed so far. It was supposed to hit us directly here in Aventura and North Miami Beach but veered to Homestead instead. Beautiful Country Club Drive is demolished after each storm, but quickly restored
to its original beauty,as are all the blown out condos and homes .

Except for what we were able to fit in the cars when we left, my wife and I were totally wiped out by by one of the earlier major wildfires in California on 9/11 eight years ago. We had the choice of feeling sorry for ourselves or continuing to move forward one step at a time. As you seem to be doing, we chose the latter. We were fortunate in that our insurance company made a mistake in writing our fire policy and wrote it for twice what they had intended (we held them to the contract) and the power company (who started the fire) matched that. We lost a lot of things that we wish we had not lost but we are now in a very comfortable position and, since we are in our "golden years", are fairly well set for the rest of our lives. We definitely know the "what do we do now" feeling but I can assure you that with patience, you will come out the other side with some bad memories but your emotional stability intact. Wishing you the very best.

Damn !! I like the way you think. I'm going to set up a trap for some old braggart and, when the moment is right, I'll swoop in for the kill.

Good to hear that you survived. And sorry about the cars and garage. I do have a car loss story, but it does not top yours.

My husband got hit a deer when his Suabru had less than 1000 miles on it. Extensive damage but not totaled. We had it repaired. Almost 1 year later a semi had too sharp of a left turn and the end of the trailer drove over the hood. He saw it coming but a car was behind him so he could not back up. Almost the same amount of damage in the same place on the car. Windshield, hood, front quarter pannel and door. Again not quite totaled. But hubby said that there was no way in hell he would get back in that car. We sold it to dealership. They gave us a pretty good deal since it was the 5th Subaru we bought from them.

Seeing your destroyed garage is shocking. That whole event must have been a serious setback in so many ways. Perhaps the best way to see it is in the rearview mirror and be grateful that no one was hurt, your house was undamaged, you had good insurance which covered the financial loss, the months of inconvenience while repairs were made is past and while you didn't mention it, I'll bet you had a lot of friends and neighbors who helped you get through it. That's a pretty good start to move on from and I'm sure you did.

It was a bit amazing to me, Reuss, how many people stopped and offered help the morning after the storm hit. Many of them I didn't even know, but they all lived in the general area and were sincere in their offers.

My wife said she had never seen me so focused on an issue before. I remarked that we had just had our butt kicked by nature and that I damn well better be focused. The reality of the situation demanded that I start mobilizing the forces necessary to deal with what had just happened. By the grace of God and with the understanding and support of many, we emerged from this episode as stronger people, both my wife and I.

I remember well how badly Andrew ripped apart south Florida. A business associate of mine and his wife lost everything ....house, everything in it....all reduced to a concrete foundation pad. Fortunately, they had heeded the warnings and gotten to a son's home in St. Augustine.

I have a friend that lives in a very nice home directly on the beach near Jacksonville. His new annual premium for home insurance is now $19,000 ...ANNUAL PREMIUM. I don't know what his deductible is. Good Lord.

Wow! Sorry you went through that. Insurance is a terrible thing————————- until you need it.

Thanks for looking in. I know of two people who say they're contemplating dropping hurricane damage coverage...say the cost is prohibitive. That's a terrible option to have to consider.

Wow, I remember Irma, but we didn't get it bad here. Hopefully this season will end peacefully next week. All of our homeowners rates have about doubled because of the claims throughout the state from hurricane damage.

All of the folks I know that live directly on the beach around Jacksonville have seen rates practically double.

It sure was, John.

It prompted me to do something that I didn't really want to do. Within 2 weeks after what happened, every tree that could possibly fall on my house, disappeared. I wasn't prepared to deal with any encore performances.
