If you are displaying any other flag, that would go below the Stars & Stripes, and to the right of it, and smaller.

When an ship/boat visits a foreign port it should fly a small courtesy flag for the country being visited, and this should be flown at the cross trees (higher than their ensign)
Note for foreign sailors visiting the USA, their ensign must be bigger than the stars & stripes they fly. Likewise in most of the countries I've visited the stars & stripes would be flown in a position inferior to the local countries flag...

I've never had a reason to fly the stars & stripes, but as a yachtsman I've sailed under both the British red ensign (aka the 'red duster') & the Dutch version of the European flag. We did always try to take it in at sunset, but I believe we were supposed to keep them flying in the rain.

I fly the American flag and below that I have the Finnish flag. I have a solar light on top of the flag pole that keeps them lit up at night...K.A.N.

IF you read my response, I have not denigrated your opinion or stated anywhere that mine was the correct one - only that it is shared by by many other veterans, which is true. I’ve treated you respectfully and said that we can agree to disagree. What more do you want?

I don’t understand your forked tongue metaphor. You seem angry and somewhat virulent in your attitude about the flag. You mentioned you are a veteran - did you have some bad experience with the military that is fueling this anger?
IF you read my response, I have not denigrated you... (show quote)

Ask yourself why the flag outweighs the principle, in your mind. You may get a light bulb go off for you.

Not sure what principle you’re referring to, but not interested in a prolonged discussion about comments so obtrusively worded.

Goodbye

They should be same size and same height. See my previous post on the rules

The American Legion among others has publications listing do's and don'ts for the flag. My main source of ire with the flag's disrespect is seeing it flown on a moving vehicle. Any vehicle traveling more than fifteen (15) mph should have the flag furled (rolled up and covered) to prevent damage.

Just for the record. All claimed "Dos and donts" for flags are not official decrees. They are suggestions. The DoD rules are for the military only, not for the general populace.

As to the "flying" the colors, blame that on race tracks and Hollywood, besides other sporting events.

As with many suggestions, please think about why they are given before disregarding them. Shredding the American flag at speeds over 40mph make no sense to me; I see it as disrespectful, as do many others.
As to what I see from Hollywood and sporting events there is much to blame; their main goal is money--your money.

The Flag Code is The Flag Code. Respect it...or not. It is a "guidline" and as such is in place for those who respect the colors and want to display them correctly. If you're military, active or inactive, it's just the rules. I started learning Flag Code in Boy Scouting and then later when competing in Legion and VFW sanctioned events.

The only time it's allowed on vehicles that I remember is on the Commander's vehicle on base (not on the interstate at 65mph).
Also, the only time I've seen it allowed to be flown at night is at HQ. I believe 2 lights are recommended.

Since I like in an apartment the only option I have it put my flag on a pole of conduit and mount it in the back of the truck bed behind the drivers side. I can take it our at night and bring it in. I do not think driving with it back there is a good idea after reading the comments here but I have not yet done this anyway.
I believe it is good to be proud and fly our flag.
Bruce.

Here's the flag code. I've been involved with marching groups through the years and there are definitely rights and wrongs in display.
