And the $9.99/month includes unlimited professional support 24/7. It has saved my bacon many times.

I have never been a subscription fan. I believe once you buy the program it's yours. Of course when new features are added then yes buy the new program. I shoot professional video. My editing software from Grass Valley cost me over $500. When they ad new features you can upgrade for a decent upgrade price. I shoot some stills for my video work, rarely use Adobe. There are other programs out there that do just as good or better than Adobe and they do not require a subscription.

Photographers today face a troubling predicament – essential software that can only be accessed through expensive subscriptions plans. While I'm not a professional photographer, it appears that many on UHH are professional.

The Adobe Plan, which covers practically all necessary tools for photography, is $10.00 a month. I don't drink, but many spend 10 times and more on beer/alcohol per month. It's a choice.

"But it's just the price of a cup of coffee!"

I paid $1,185 for subscriptions last year and $1,640 so far this year. That's for subscriptions of any kind. I try to avoid subscribing, yet look how much I'm paying.

Subscriptions are a constant source of income, and we will see more and more of them. This practice has even spread to cars - seat heaters, more power, etc. If you want what you bought, you will have to keep paying every month.

Software is like any other technology these days. It has bugs...becomes out of date or incompatible with new OS and hardware platforms/devices....and developers often think of new features and capabilities that can be added, often at user demand, especially in these social media days. Software requires maintenance as it adapts to the world around it. Years ago we thought of software as a book or a hammer that would not change over time....and that mentality carries till today...."Hey I bought it and OWN this box!" Good, just keep in mind what you own needs to be maintained occasionally.

I recall the days when the Adobe CS was over $1500 and it actually came in a box! When Adobe introduced the software suite subscription for only $50/month or less, I knew a revolution was coming...that was less than a decade ago.
Software is like any other technology these days. ... (show quote)

You are suggesting that $1500 was a fair price - when this software was available to countless millions of photographers? There are several companies (e.g. MS, Adobe) who aspire to be Big Brother and rule the world using our hard earned wages.

It's the photographers themselves can change it. Should not be the government. The subcription model is so popular today because the majority of photographers prefer it. Mainly they want to pay a small amount monthly rather the than a large sum at one time. In a society the whole have to follow the majority.

In a society there are rich and poor. The rich can afford to live now and pay now. The poor live only by paying later - and who do they have to pay?

Aren't there others who are not rich and not poor?

Company like Adobe can not rule the world unless the majority of the people of the world support it. In this case the majority of the people do prefer the Adobe subscription plan.

Developers develop/maintain software.
One wants to use it, buy or subscribe, depending on their business model.
Easy.

Individually....
But a dozen or so different $10 subscriptions can add up, quickly.

I have done the math. Photoshop used to be around $700 to purchase. Then the price went up and up and up. At 10 dollars a month that is years and years of a subscription plan plus years before a stand alone product would pay for itself, but i had to purchase photoshop more frequently than that because of the updates. Now i get tje updates as soon as they become available and it costs me less than purchasing the product outright. Suvscriptions save money not cost it.

If you dont want to spend the money use gimp. Otjerwise you are getting a much better deal than you were with the old system. The same goes for plugins. In the long run suvscriptions just plain give you more bang for your buck.
