And who do You think are tracking our driving characteristics?
This will soon govern Your insurance rates!
Not to mention, whether they will cover You in an accident!
I am sure most readers know this is already in place, voluntarily so far, using a location tracker supplied by the insurance company if you opt in. I wonder when they will no longer need to send you a device if you give permission to use your car's built-in tracker. Eventually, some states will not require a driver's permission. (In SC, not having proof of insurance can be worse than driving without a current registration or license.) For over thirty years I assumed grocery stores might sell customers' buying habits to medical insurance companies, and that some medical labs might supply specimens for DNA screening for the same purpose. Why not? HIPAA is ignored routinely. It may be only a matter of time before some whistle blower speaks up. There has already been a tradition of using borrowers' genetic histories in the real-estate market long before DNA sequencing became so accessible:

I'm thinking sometime soon as EVs get more popular they will be equipped with GPS tracking devices so that they will pay their share of road tax. I wonder what that will do to the popularity of going all electric since saving at the gas pump is one of their selling points.

So I took the car to a local repair shop to have it checked/repaired but they said they don't work on anything earlier than a 1999 vehicle which he said was the same with most garages.
Wow! That is amazing. Long story short, the Ford dealer installed a rebuilt engine in my older Escort. There was a delay because they had to find someone who could adjust the carb. Funny! I've always been very good at adjusting carburetors. Of course, in later years, they weren't adjustable - even on lawnmowers.

I got a red-light camera ticket in CA that showed I went thru the "red" light .087 seconds after it turned "red".
It takes at LEAST .7 seconds for a human to recognize and react to a light changing to red.
So in my eyes/brain, it was still green. No matter, had to pay the fine and go to traffic school. They banned red-light cameras the next year.
You said: "They banned red-light cameras the next year."
But, I bet that your car insurance rates didn't go down . . . . sigh,

The government is up your arse in so many ways more...way more...and far more dangerous.
That is why I like our 1970 E-TYPE it does not spy on me and can break any USA speed limit in third gear and run all day at 110 MPH in forth won't tell the anyone. The only modern electronic device is an AM/Fm radio with a cd player that I installed in place of the original radio about 8 years ago.

Well, that's probably in our future. The same thing happens with red light cameras. You receive a ticket in the mail. Some towns are doing away with those cameras because they're not fair.
If you’re worried about red light cameras and speed cameras, don’t drive in Brooklyn or Queens, NY. Brooklyn has speed cameras about every 2 blocks on major streets. Red light cameras are even more plentiful.
If you want to know where all these are, and in any state, ope and drive with the WAZE App. You don’t have to set a destination, just use the map aspect.
BTW, Google owns WAZE as well as Google maps. They, too, know everything.
This discussions are hilarious.

Dang. When I had a pickup I didn't tailgate! I value mu vehicles!
When someone tailgates me too closely, I purposely slow down until they get the message. Especially large, heavy trucks.

I'm sure you know that modern cars are loaded with electronics that keep track of everything. I watched a video last night from a car shop that's working on a 2024 Mustang. Cars never have enough power. 😊 What he said is scary.
Basically, new cars spy on you and report back to the manufacturer. Imagine an invisible passenger riding with you all the time. But it's worse than that. It also knows everything that's on your phone, provided the phone has been paired with the car. It has all your contacts' numbers, and it can read your texts and emails even if you haven't read them yet. Basically, it knows as much as your phone knows. Did all your passengers click their seat belts? You may not know, but your car and the manufacturer know.
How about your driving? Are you weaving too much? If so, you're either tired or drunk. An alarm will sound, and it won't stop until you pull off the road and stop the car. Naturally, the manufacturer knows about this. Want to see if your car can do 100? Nope! It's limited to 80 MPH. There are circumstances in which you can go faster, but that is decided by the car. The car's camera can read! Some passengers in your car may not be able to read speed limit signs, but the car can. It knows when you are speeding, and so does the manufacturer.
As I said above, this pertains specifically to the 2024 Mustang, but the narrator said it's more or less universal. The owner's manual contains 551 pages, and most of this is spelled out in the manual. The manual also says that Ford will give information to "authorities" that request it. It also says - as all agreements do - that the agreement can change at any time.

Google knows your every move through your smart phone. The only way to stop that is take the battery out of the phone !! Oh jeez...I'm no help. Never mind....
Cтарший брат смотрит и слушает.
That’s the least of our worries. We all carry around internet connected microphones and cameras equipped with GPS. Those awesome maps that show traffic congestion- guess how they get that up to date information.
And it’s about to get more concerning. In the next few years, AI agents that live on your phone and act as personal assistants that make you life so much easier will be on ubiquitous. Imagine the influence these can have in the hands of for profit corporations.
