I am a penny pincher and I say no.
Why?
Unless you plan to do fast shooting (in pictures) for a long period of time, the camera buffer will just and takes it time writing while you prepare something else. If you do videos? I still say no, the buffer does its job quite well.
Why pay $150 or much more for something you don't need?
DO NOT BUY a kit. You will be disappointed very quickly, purchase a 18~200 DX VR II lens instead, it cost about $800.00 but the quality will let you breathless compared to the cheap kit lenses.
I purchased a kit for my wife, as she did not want to spend the money for a good lens. One day she borrowed mine and never let it go, I purchased a new one for myself. The cheap lenses? I gave them away. I was ashamed to even ask a penny for them.

Wolf, I agree with you. I have a d60 with the same kit and once I got some extra money I bought the same lens and love it. The other 2 are just collecting dust. However for the price and to start off with it's not a bad deal.
I just mentioned just in case they can get a better deal.

If you are going to shoot RAW I woud go with a class 10 16 or 32 G
I would add a few more bucks with it and get a D7000 and the 18-200 lens.
I too have a D3100 and love it. I went through amazon.com for all of my extras (filters, batteries, memory cards, camera grip). When purchased together I saved a ton of money. Be careful when purchasing lenses for this camera. I already had one but I need to use manual so I just use the VR kit lens and love it. Here is a site that found helpful. Have fun and enjoy...

That's excellent to hear. I am really eager to see mine come in to Best Buy so I can pick it up. It comes with a 18-55mm lense, so I can see I am going to need to save my pennies for the 55-200mm lense next, I just hope this will at least give me better pics than my Coolpix L110 does, especially since I am going to give my son the Coolpix. That camera is a nice bridge camera, but I've maxxed it out as far as what I can do with it. I can take some beautiful closeups of flowers with it, but I want something with even higher detail.
If you put your pictures on your computer often you don't need much memory. I use a 1G card for most shoots. For weddings 4G always have lots of room. Go to KenRockwell.com And read about the nikon D3100. Also see what he has to say about the 18-55mm lens. He is a real PRO and dosn't stick his nose up at he less expensive kits. Then after you feel you need something more than the kit lenses etc. buy it not untill. - Dave

Thanks Dave, I put my pics on the computer after each outing, what I was also concerned about was the transfer rate whether the card would choke the performance of my camera. I got some good answers on that as I learned that if I have a 6Mb/sec card or better, it will work fine for my camera. It's going to be a while before I can move up to the 55-200mm lense I want, I just hope that I won't be dropping back on my ability to zoom for a while. It's not like birds like people coming up to them to get that perfect shot... lol

No, if I remember right without searching the thread, you were told that if you use at least a CLASS 6 card (not 6mb/sec) with a transfer rate of about 12-15mb/sec it will work fine for your camera.

For some reason I thought that Class 6 meant the same as 6mb transfer rate. It's all new to me, but I want to learn all of this inside and out. I appreciate any tips I can get with the DSLR, as this is new territory for me. All my stuff until now is from a bridge camera. Nikon Coolpix L110 model, so this is a big step upward. I understand the D3100 is a good beginner's camera for the rank amatures like me, so I can't wait until this thing ships in. :)

Even your Coolpix is a fine quality device. You can't go wrong with a Nikon, Canon, or Sony for dSLR (I have the Sony Alpha 55 myself but I drool over the Nikon D7000 as well). They're all awesome. And you can't go wrong with a Canon, Sony, Nikon, or Panasonic Lumix for P&S or bridge although I prefer Canon and Lumix personally. Yes, there are other brands but those are the top dogs, partially because of their advertising budgets but partially because they simply make incredible products too.

I drool over the D7000 too... lol My wife has the Canon SX30IS, that I got her last Mother's day, which made me look at my Coolpix L110 a little differently, and when I joined here and saw all the nice pics people were shooting with DSLRs, I just had to have one too... I like the Nikon and Canon both, but I am more familiar with Nikon having the Coolpix, even if most of the simularities are cosmetic, until you get into the real meat of the DSLR camera. My camera is being shipped in, and I can't wait until it gets here even though it's a Christmas gift... lol I know, I'm a bad boy! ;)

We had an old rooster next door that did his thing at sunrise and about every two hours during the day. Maybe he was blind or had poultry Alzheimer's... I don't know. He also did his thing right up until sunset. He was eventually eliminated, I assume by the owner. Moral of the story... don't crow so often or so loud that you irritate people or they might eliminate you from their lives when you least expect it.
