Our 16 year old granddaughter has requested some kind of digital camera for Christmas, she wants one that is lightweight but still has ISO/aperture/shutter speed controls. It should accept filters but does not necessarily need to support interchangeable lenses, but a step up from iPhone or point-and-shoot cameras. (I think lightweight is a key consideration.)

One that she suggested is the NEZINI 4K digital camera, not a brand I am familiar with.

Any suggestions?

Look at the format of the camera. Your DSLR isn't going to cut it. I'm not suggesting throwing away $120, but that's a rather cheap outlay over nearly any other digital camera option, as well as simply 'answering the mail' to the specifically requested model (gift).

The Nikon z** models are similar (like Zfc), but a lot, lot more expensive. So are Canon Powershots or Sony Cybershots. I'd go with the requested item and see if photography grows and a better model in the future is the right time to discuss better cameras -- and more expensive.

Did you read the reviews of the requested item? It’s basically a vlogging camera and doesn’t offer any control of f-stop or shutter speed. It doesn’t do the things she wants a camera to do. I’m guessing she has a cellphone that offers more control and does everything this camera can do but better.

They’ve also got some available from Nikon’s Refurb website, and you might also find something on Adorama or B&H. I saw a refurb Nikon D3400 for $399 yesterday.

Seemingly, no, I didn't read all the details. Taking one look at the camera on Amazon -- and the price -- I kind saw everything I 'thought' I needed to know.

If the 16 year old in question did, in fact, express, "lightweight but still has ISO/aperture/shutter speed controls", yes, this camera doesn't meet all those requirements, nor would anyone at this $120 price point.

What the DSLRosaurs all clearly miss is the marketing attributes "for YouTube and Anti-Shake Video". Phones aren't going to be as good as an IBIS-enabled camera. Moreover, phones and interchangeable lens cameras also cost 4x to 8x the cost of this proposed gift.

The idea for the OP to 'talk' to the relative is a good approach, although a shared vocabulary in the potential technical issues of this camera / any camera might limit the effectiveness of the discussion.

Well the OP never mentioned price, just that his granddaughter mentioned that camera, so we have no idea what his budget is. Like I said before, if she really wants to learn how to use manual controls then he should go at least M4/3. Both Olympus and Panasonic have models that would fit the bill, like an EM-10 or a G85. The suggestion of a Sony A6000 would be good but I’d probably go A6100 because they can still be found new. I’d definitely stay away from those DSLR and bridge camera suggestions.

I think there are better choices in a similar 'look' via size and dials, I mentioned a few initially, but none are in the $120 range, something I'd think our 16 yr old would have reviewed (considered) when identifying a specific model / brand.

Now now...don't listen to the person who wants it.

Come on now, I clearly said the easy out was just answer the mail and get the requested item, and not to invent better ideas .... especially not by listening to the UHH DSLRosaurs on UHH.

You are truly ridiculous. She has no idea what it is or that it doesn’t do what she wants.

Assuming facts / ideas not really known .... a very UHH quality. Hooray! I hope User ID has some new pics to capture the community's thinking in action.

Well, she told her grandfather what was important and that camera does none of that, so I think it’s a fairly safe assumption. You assumed he was looking for a $120 camera. He never mentioned price. It was someone else that brought up the price.

You simply...make things up in your own mind.
Where was that ever stated?

I would listen to my niece...she is 16 years old...not 8. She is on the threshold of being an adult...she may have already crossed it...I don't know her.

It's a teachable moment...that works...either way.

I don't let opportunities like that to slide by...

Go read the original post and then look at the specs on that camera. It does none of that stuff.
