You were on board for the "Fire"? That was the scariest conflagration I've ever seen on tape/film.

I was in the Seabees in 1969-70, but later on as a Reservist, I attended fire-fighting/damage-control school at Norfolk in 1973. The highlight of the class was the film of the fire. Normally an instructor would narrate, but in my class there was a Commander who was an aviator, and was on the flight bridge when the fire started. His flight had completed a mission just before the Zuni rocket caromed off the deck and struck the fuel pod of an A-4.

He was a bit emotional, even six years after the fire. There were no unbelievers after that.

Glad you came through. You very much have earned "Fair Winds and Following Seas".

Is it just me or does it feel inappropriate to say, “happy” Veterans Day?

You were on board for the "Fire"? That ... (show quote)

Yes I was on board for the fire. I was an 18 year old AO. Thank you for your kind words.

It’s not inappropriate to say Happy Veterans Day. Veterans Day is a day to recognize those who served our country in uniform. I think it would be inappropriate to say Happy Memorial Day because Memorial Day is a day set aside for the remembrance of those who died in uniform in service to our country.

It's not just you, it felt pretty weird for me as well. If your frame it in the context that we made it back, it kind of takes the edge off. But I think people struggle for something else to say. It is kind of like the thorn in my side of someone saying thank you for your service, it sure wasn't that way when I got back. I just kind of roll with it because most will never understand...
