Ive got 25 reasons NOT to buy it, and each reason bears a likeness of Ben Franklin. But, its great to see global shutters in production. Expect it to be democrotized rather quickly.

Wow! If I were a pro action photographer, I’d be all over both.

Yes, as more global shutter models make it into the marketplace, the prices should come down.

Cheers

Odds are that they will introduce a global shutter on their pro models as well within a year. If you’re shooting primarily sports or BIF or fast moving animals, it’s a great feature (as well as the pre exposure), but for all those other pro and advanced amateur shooters that shoot portraits, landscapes, etc., the feature is of less or no importance. Mechanical shutters are so reliable, that losing them is not a big deal. Losing the noise is of course a nice feature for wedding shooters in churches and for some close ups of wildlife, but that’s been available for a while on mirrorless as long as fast action didn’t cause the rolling shutter artifact. At present, it’s a great feature like high fps for a particular segment such as sports shooters, and for the rest of us, I’d guess the technology will be standard on most cameras within a few years, just as electronic data storage is slowly replacing mechanical.

Yes global shutter sensor cameras will be more common as the years go by, but I am convinced there will still be stacked-sensor cameras and BSI sensor cameras being produced and sold for many years to come, maybe forever..

Not everyone will need a global shutter sensor camera, even if they might benefit from one. And the price will be a factor also. The prices of global shutter sensor cameras should come down as they become more common from all makers

I would be surprised if the upcoming Canon R1 is not a global shutter sensor camera, and that is due before the summer Olympics in Paris in 2024.

Cheers and best to you.

Just in from Top Pro Sports and Photojournalist photographer Patrick Murphy-Racey, a freelance photographer that travels the USA and the world on assignments, and has been chosen as a Sony Artisan for the quality of his work in a long career.

Patrick does a deep dive into the A9III for stills. He mentions the current pros and cons of these Beta-copy A9III.

And importantly, he points out that the current Beta-test copy A9III are only loaded with firmware version, O.8. Production copies of all Sony cameras start with firmware version 1.0 or higher. Patrick mentions some of the improvements coming in the updated firmware for the actual production models before they are scheduled to go on sale in the USA on Feb. 23, 2024 (source of shipping date is B&H Photo/Video).

Patrick points out some properties and abilities of the A9III that got lost in the headlines of the global sensor. Like the ability to shoot at a base 125 ISO, not just the base of 250 ISO as reported, and other cool features.

If you have the time, this is well worth watching. Patrick will have further deep dive videos on his Youtube channel on the A9III video features, and other updates.

Cheers and best to you.

A9III
More info:
Patrick Murphy-Racey, top pro sports shooter, photojournalist and a Sony Artisan.

from my buddy and Sony Pro Rep David Snyder who has a bigger brain than mine:

"The dust protective curtain closes when the camera turns off, not when a lens is removed.

The burst playback as a group is on all the cameras inc. A1, not an Xperia feature. It’s not on by default in other cameras. What’s new is that it will play that burst/group as a quick video/sequential view.

You can auto focus fine at 1/80000 today. You can not shoot continuously at 1/80,000 on present Beta-copy A9III. only single frame.
1/16000 for continuous shooting. The note was coming firmware update will raise the maximum continuous shutter speed to 1/80,000 for burst at 120fps. .

Pocketwizard may not work at the high speeds for triggering and timing maybe off.

Pre capture can be set for much less than a half second minimum. The timing goes below .1 sec to .09-.01 as well. Pre capture can be set to begin with shutter half press, or af on, or both. So users can control when pre capture starts while still using AF separately (WOW!!!)

ISO range will not change in firmware, but in menu can be set as low as 125 ISO.

Exposure compensation dial is also on the grip, and there is a lug for a camera strap on the grip to carry the camera vertically and more accessible."

Cheers and best to you.

We'll need global demand for global shutters.

Over time as all makers put out global shutter cameras, demand will rise. These companies all know how to market and create demand for their products, trust me. LOL

Cheers and best to you.

My Sony A9 (ver. 1) and Sony 200-600 zoom lens have been working remarkably well for the past year. After months of mistakes, menu learning, and trial and error shooting, I am finally getting consistently sharp and well metered action. However, BFD! This has been true of virtually all major camera systems world wide - whether film or digital - for well over a century. Once you become skilled in using them, getting consistent results of high caliber are going to happen. Virtually all top cameras today will produce superb results, once you've learned their intricacies and mastered your technique. I also Shoot Canon and Nikon, but for BIF, I am loving this Sony rig. One wish I have is I might benefit from a higher res sensor - like 42M +-, since birds are small and the extra resolution brings out higher quality detail. However, my A9 in my current environment is working fine. A used ARIII, IV or AI are options, but not justifiable yet. The A9 at 24MP is still giving me very good quality results if I am within 200 feet away from BIF/horse/wildlife action. Since I live in the country in East Dallas, that's my typically shooting environment. I bought both the Sony A9 and the 200-600 used on EBAY for about 55% below MSRP (2022).That's another plus. RE: this A9III; $6K seems absurdly high, and the camera's features versus my A9, are virtually nill and/or unnecessary for me. But...it must be exciting for the Sony sales dept., along with certain pros / hobbyists that might gain an edge, have a lot of disposable cash, and/or have a company/entity willing to pay the bill for one. My A9 shutter speed is 20fps when in electronic mode. That's plenty fast for the hawks, herons, cardinals, blue jays, geese, and egrets that land on my property every year. And the focus tracking - most critical for BIF/Moving target - is outstanding, now that I finally figured out what the hell I am doing.
