thank you so much for your reply.......and i really loved your shots.....not a film shooter but do enjoy ultra wide/fisheye lenses.....Thanks for your descriptions of your process and on the prints......good reading!!!!!!

Thanks, my pleasure! You prompted me to visit their website just to double-check the permit idea. Like much of these policies, they're vague enough to make the issue concerning. If anyone every asks me if I'm a "professional", they get a clear "no", just shooting for fun. The burden is now on them to prove otherwise ...

Thanks, Paul!

I transited Chicago Union Station on my way to my second shot at a Bachelor's degree. Made it that time. It was impressive even in 1965, but more so now that it is restored.

Don't forget, Hitchcock's "North by Northwest" Featuring the "How does a girl like you become, well, a girl like you." Ms. Saint and that Grant guy.

Great shots combining the film retrospective with a great architectural revival. I used the EF 28-90 IA on my EOS 10s and A2.

Chicago Union Station is Amtrak's flagship station in the Midwest and is located on the west-side of Chicago's downtown Loop area. While serving long-distance Amtrak passenger trains, the station is also the downtown terminus for six Metra commuter lines.

The present Chicago Union Station opened in 1925, replacing an earlier station on this site built in 1881. The station is the fourth-busiest rail terminal in the United States, and the busiest outside of the Northeast Corridor.

Union Station

Union Station is one of Chicago's iconic structures, reflecting the city's strong architectural heritage and historic achievements. The station has Bedford limestone Beaux-Arts facades, massive Corinthian columns, marble floors, and a Great Hall, all highlighted by brass lamps.

At the building's center is the Great Hall, a 110-foot high atrium capped by a large barrel-vaulted skylight. The $22 million dollar restoration of this space was completed in 2019, restoring the Great Hall to its original colors and making the space brighter with a restored and protected skylight.

Union Station

Large wooden benches are arranged in the Great Hall for travelers to wait for connections. The 2018–19 renovation rebuilt the historic skylight, adding weather protection and restoring original detailing. The restoration increased natural light by 50 to 60 percent.

The station has appeared in numerous films, including The Sting (1973), Silver Streak (1976), On the Right Track (1981), Doctor Detroit (1983), The Untouchables (1987), My Best Friend's Wedding (1997), Flags of Our Fathers (2006), Public Enemies (2009), and Man of Steel (2013).

The Great Hall's columns are of textured Roman travertine marble, with leafy golden Corinthian capitals. The ceilings and insets are coffered, with decorative rosettes.

Chicago Union Station is named a union station, like many train stations across the United States that were shared by several railroad companies.

The images in this post feature two different types of expired color 35mm film: Fuji Press 800 (expired May 2004) and Fuji Superia X-tra 400 (expired Sept 2003). Adjustments were made to the ISO setting when each roll was loaded to an EOS 1v. Details on the exposure and lenses are provided in the EXIF data from Flickr, just use the image titles as URL links to Flickr. The scanned JPEGs were processed in Adobe Lightroom v6.

Nice series Paul. Why Expired Film, cost, experiential desire, color shift? Wow, the Chicago Union Station looks a lot like the Los Angeles Union Station on steroids - huge and tall room(s)! L.A. likely copied a few of the buildings at much older cities.

Very nice! Wonderful results and, I have been there and you have captured the grander and the "star wars" scale of that magnificent building.

Thanks Mike! Fare question on expired film. There's two reasons, 1, at this point, the Fuji Press 800 is the largest count of color rolls I have on-hand; and 2, this is one of the 'fastest' color rolls I could select for this indoor work. And, 'fast' is relative, when I'm shooting the expired 800 around ISO-250, even using IS-enable lenses and / or faster apertures.

Yes indeed Paul!
Certainly reminds me of a day I was "stuck" in ChiTown during a trip to Minnie a number of yrs ago. It was at Christmas time, on Amtrack, b/c an "engine wouldn't start" .... was the explanation. And YES: at Union Station for 24 hrs....

I spent a few hours at Union Station in November 2016 on may way to San Diego. I had arrived in Chicago via the South Shore {‘interurban’ railroad} from South Bend. Amtrak has a nice lounge for passengers; I cannot say anything bad about the place / Amtrak.

Thanks Carl, Mike, rehess, Flying Three, NikonGal, Mike W! I'm out the door now to pick up a friend at Union Station. A college buddy is there most every work day, but he was unsure Friday if the holiday decorations are up yet, not having to travel through the Great Hall while commuting into / out of his office in the Loop.
