For our Veterans here; Always Remembered.

Pardon the story, but this commercial hit home.

In the nursing home visiting my father who had dementia. Walked in and saw him sitting on the edge of his bed, gray hair that had been once true deep black, pushed back. He was apparently looking through imaginary folders, holding one up, setting it down on an imaginary desk, and picking up another. Deep lines caressing his brow and eyes, cheeks a bit sunken in, tight lipped, and a determined and intense frown framed his face.

"Hi Dad". Not a word. So I stood still. In a few moments he looked up, straight in my eyes and told me he needed me to complete an inventory of parts. Of course, "Yes Sir".
"I want this list Complete! I need Everything accounted for and done Immediately. Don't come back until it's done"!

I exited his room, walked around the nurses' station, got some coffee, chatted a bit taking the time I figured it would take Dad to forget. again.

In walking back in, Dad had that piercing blue eyes look to him when he was focused he had in earlier days.
"Do you have my list, Son"! By this time I realized I wasn't his son, but a corporal back in WWII, with him in his command, Pacific area, in the Army Air Corps. "I have been working on it, Sir, and have most of it"

Well, hell, I've never been good at game playing. Especially with my Dad.
The torrent of irritation and demands and admonishment was astounding to me, as I'd never seen my father that worked up over something. Well, other than when I was a little boy and saw his reaction on the news of losing one or both parents. When the stoic and tough veneer cracked.

With a plethora of cuss and spit, he told me to get "My Ass back out There "! , and "Don't come back until what I had been told to do was Completed! There's now way in hell you've had the time it would take to complete what has been given you to do!!!
ooops silly me
Do you understand Corporal, I need this list of parts to keep these planes in the air! WE have a responsibility to protect our pilots and I "By God" am going to do Everything we can to get our boys back home. Safely.

Yes Sir, was the simple answer and turned to go. Took 3 steps and stopped. I sometimes am slow on the uptake, but realized, in a daze from his reprimand, just what my position was. With the feeling of having eyes searing my backside, I turned, pulled my feet together, squared my shoulders and saluted My Superior. I saluted my Father.
Finally, a moment when I could express the gratitude for all he did for his family. Growing up, working with him, helping to keep care of the places he provided. And getting into trouble.

He briefly looked me in the eye and lightly saluted back, and went back to his paperwork. Dismissed.

I can't remember in time when I have ever been more proud of my Dad; a sick but proud man , who through the dregs of an insidious disease proved who he was, and still is, in some form, at times.
Later that year we had a Thanksgiving drink, in his room, just the two of us. They said it may not be a good idea,
but What the Hell ! May not have another chance.
And we didn't.

This is in honor of all those served here on UHH, and to those I've never met. Honor and Pride to all the men and women who served.

I could relate to the son coming home, and the absolute pride and honor - both given and received. Especially from where the respect and love of probably no one more important in his life, his Dad.
Yep. This one made m...... nevermind

Very touching! It’s nice to see people honoring Veterans, especially tomorrow on Veterans Day.

Personally, though, (and I’m a Vietnam Veteran) I don’t understand why Veterans want to wear their uniform so many years later. I want to forget, not remember.

My father was a WW II veteran. He was in The Battle of Sicily, and Battle of Tunisia. He came back home a broken man, and had what we now call PTSD his entire life.

I have very mixed feelings about all of this. I remember after I got out of the service headhunters would tell me to “remove” my military experience from the bottom of my resume, because it was seen as a “negative” to employers. One of the reasons why some of this “honoring” seems hollow to me.

Nonetheless, if Veterans want to put on their uniforms and remember, who am I to judge. Good for them!

This is their one-minute commercial.

Not a word is spoken and none is needed.

I have seen that commercial before and it always gives me a lump in my throat and sometimes a tear in my eye. Thank you to all military, past, present, and future. To them we owe thanks for our freedoms and liberties. God bless the all

I have known many who have served in combat and most say little about the ugliness they saw.
