FedEx charges

So as not to hijack Jerry's shipping charges thread, I have a question for you folks about current shipping charges.

I sold an item (an aluminum box) to a person living in California, I live in Michigan. This item weighed 19.4 pounds and measured 18" X 24". I went to a FedEx shipping store last Thursday with the box to find out how much it would cost to pack and ship to CA, they quoted me a price of $140, I went back to drop it off yesterday, and was told it would cost $206 to pack and ship it there. When I questioned the charge to ship that day compared to 5 days prior, I was told that the price of shipping changes daily. That seems rather odd to me.

Is this a common practice these days?

It would be strange to change the price daily. It's possible that they gave you the wrong price earlier but I don't think the price has changed.

I just shipped a 42 lb battery back to the vendor using UPS. They have a flat rate service for anything under 50 lbs and 1700 cubic inches. Cost was $29.50 or close to that.

We flew down here to Palm Beach county to our condo for a few weeks. We’ll be back in January for a longer stay. Since we were flying, from Long Island, NY, we were limited as to what we could bring so we decided to ship some of our stuff.
I bought a ox about 18” x 18” x 18”. We filled it with 28 LB’s of stuff. I dropped it off at Staples this past Sunday. I wanted it to arrive by Tues.
the price was going to be about $300.
Wednesday (today) would have been about $200.
I picked Thursday (tomorrow) for $67.
I SHOULD HAVE sent it last Friday to get it yesterday for the same $67.
Poor planning on my part.

Check with the local post office. I found they are a lot cheaper.

Don’t use the UPS stores unless you have no other option. Packing is expensive and their shipping charge is more expensive than if you use the UPS web site to calculate the rate. I pack items myself and then check rates on USPS, UPS and FedEx online to decide who gets the business. UPS stores treat everything as a profit opportunity.

Thanks everyone!
I will check prices online before I ship items again.

Not to hijack any of this thread, but I had a situation several years ago where I needed to get a check delivered the next day. The choice was to drive across town to FedEx or do a wire transfer.

Either way, $25-30, and wire transfer was far more reliable.

Apparently, Fed-Ex bases their pricing quotes according to how their (stock) quotes are for that week. (Looks sad!)
Some of my retirement funds were placed with FedEx…..Like the rest of the stocks——
They haven’t increased in value in 2 years.

Two days, 2 different requests for price. One for shipping, one for pack and ship. Do it at the PO, flat rate Priority and its cheaper.
