This one is spectacular, Linda. The black and white is prefect for this shot, and I agree that the cropped version has more impact.
Thank you, John. I'm so glad you enjoyed!

The cropped versions are nice. But then I go back to the original, and I see the value of (and the need for) the distant hills. They add a dimension to the image that is lost when excluded. They provide a natural end to the fog and nicely frame the valley in which it resides.
Very concise and valuable insights, Kathy. Thanks so much!

First thing I did with the original and cropped was tap the screen and view the image with black background. Doing that the cropped version becomes more dramatic imho. But, that doesn’t take away from the appeal of seeing the break of the fog bank break with the clearer horizon. I like them both.

Many thanks for your interest and taking the time to view on black, and to offer analysis!

Thank you so much for your detailed reply, Mr. L.

Not sure what you mean by shape shadowing. I've attached a desaturated color version I was working on, and made it larger, if you'd like to edit and re-post in this thread. I had a brain cramp when I cropped the psd of the b&w and didn't do "save as," so now I have no psd of the composition I posted first.

"Benefit of the story..." In my repy to Longshadow I suggested the two versions = two stories now:

1. The fog is settled into a lower elevation of a region surrounded by mountains (big hills actually, this being Washington State ).

2. Forms in fog, from well defined to indistinct.

Thanks again!

Linda, my sense was based on the second story. Thank you for the offer to try. I concentrated only on the left half of the image to add a sense of greater separation/distance from near to far and from the more dense clouds in the right half of the image. I tried to slightly reduce the highlights in the furthest clouds, but it looked too gray. Then I tried to slightly enhance the whites at the crest of the closer roll of clouds but even feathered it looked unnatural since it didn't blend well. Have to admit my eyes and my idea were not on the same page.

I appreciate your follow-up. I think it's a fairly tricky exposure and scene and compromises are needed, depending on the look one is going for. Thanks again for your time and interest.

I have to agree that IMHO, the cropped one is much more striking and beautiful

I like the crop from the top but I would like it to be just above the mountain's crest. Then the dark at the top reflects the darkness at the bottom and the sharp delineation of the clouds really has some punch. Wish I were there.

Years ago we talked about Wendell Berry's writings on a sense of place. The original shot gives that story, it needs the mountain range and the sky. I like the crop, but its story is about fog. Fog and its impact on place is a worthy subject nicely captured here. Getting the most out of processing fog shots in on my list so thanks again for the nudge!

Thank you, Phil. It's great to hear I'm keeping your to-do list filled up See my crop per druthven's comment just above. All the best!
