EMBARASSING MOMENT

I did take an extra CF card with me Saturday for the car show.
I'm using my Olympus E-Volt 520. I used it for the first time in years for the car show last Saturday. This Saturday, 11/4/23, I was sure to take an extra CF card with me Saturday for the car show.
I got to the car show and began taking pictures. The camera sounded like all was in order. But these older eyes and a bright sunny day made looking at the viewing screen impossible. At one point I got some shade and saw the warning on the screen that there was no card in the camera. Embarrassing.
I used my 'extra' card and went back to shooting. I didn't realize the shutter would click without a card. Live and learn.
This morning I removed the card and started shooting in the front yard. Sure sounded good. I will be more attentitive in the future.

My camera can be set to NOT shoot without card.
Which I have set.
See if that parameter is in the camera setup.
Aside from the fact that there is ALWAYS a card in the camera, even when the camera is stowed.

As stated, set your camera to NOT shoot if there is no card.

Thank you for your replies.
I went through the manuals for the E-520 and E-500 and did not find a way to set to NOT to shoot if there is no card.
Next I went through the camera's menu. I wasn't able to find anything there.
Later I'll check the manual for the Nikon D3100. Maybe there is something in that manual/camera that could possibly direct me when I again look at the Olympus.
Assuming there is not a NOT SHOOT function on the Oly I'll just have to be more careful.

Some of today's camera's will not take an image without a card. I know my Sony tells me it cannot open the shutter if a card has not been inserted into the camera. It all but sticks out it's tongue at me!!!!!!!!!!!!!

When I set up a new camera, I change two settings. I make sure it will not shoot without a memory card, and I make sure it will shoot when I press the shutter button, regardless of focus.

I think the ability to release the shutter without a card is intended to allow the camera to be tried in a store.

I had a similar problem as the OP, but the card was in, only it was corrupted. Camera clicked away and showed me the images as they were taken...of Pompeii! Got back to the ship and started looking at what I took before I noticed the problem. That was the day I started using the second card slot for backup, not overflow.

still lucky that you had a spare card. I think after each shot, you should check / review your image, then right there you'll find there's no card, that's one thing, some camera let you store a few pictures in its memory, try to seach in your camera, they may be still inside its memory part. I always charge my batteries 1 day ahead, store all old photos in my PC, then clear all of them, make a few test exposes to make sure every thing is ok before any event.
