In either case, you can bet the estimated amount of tax to be collected is greatly exaggerated and does not take into account the increased paperwork burden on businesses and individuals.[/quote]

Not to mention the increased number of federal employees needed to implement this! Our government keeps growing never mind the expense to our economy! They need to use that money to secure our borders!

I am wondering though. If someone bought a Nikon Z8 for $4000, used it for a little while and then sell it on Ebay for $3000. Ebay will report the $3000 sales to the IRS. What kind of tax that person has to pay?

You wouldn't owe any tax. I don't know how this will be reported on your tax return. You can visit IRS.gov and see if they have info yet. BTW, as an individual, you cannot claim a loss. The Feds only want to be a partner when you do well.

I have not sold anything (used items only) on eBay for probably a decade or more! But I buy various items at least once per month (new or used). And I buy all kinds of things from Amazon and their associated dealers several times per week! Selling online or by mail order has gotten to be more complicated and less desirable mostly due to governmental rules (even if reasonable for businesses) and sales taxes.

My main beef with eBay is that I have not crossed the $600 threshold no matter how they calculate it. There is no reason for them to hold my money. I certainly will NOT be selling anything additional this year.

I just sold a couple of items on ebay this week, one was cancelled by the buyer (as order the wrong item). No problem, the sale was cancelled and relisted, but yet ebay still shows I sold the item and shows the price in my 30 day total. I hope they don't think they are going to report it for tax purposes.

Tell Ebay that you are an 'Asylum Seeker' and you do not have a Social Security Number.

You think they will go for it?

It's the govt.

Scratch a serious problem in the private sector...there is a govt. regulation underneath.

Really trying to move this to the Attic. I guess it never really belonged in the Main Photography forum.
But now that you opened the door, sure, things were so much better back in the 19th century there weren’t any regulations. 🙄

Just saying the word govt. is enough these days...so fragile.

I wonder if having several eBay accounts would avoid that "problem."

This type of thing is getting more common - for sales tax, too.
