"LR keeps telling me my catalogue is too big." [[]] I have never seen Lightroom Classic display catalog is too big. This needs to be addressed first. Has anyone else in the modern era? Let's get this answer first.

I ask a pro about this and he said to ignore it. Several others said the same thing. So I’m ignoring it and hit the box that said do not show again…

SD cards are GBytes. Yes, they're better than CD's for size but still, anyone who has a moderate collection of images is going to have a large pile of cards storing things. Which card has the image(s) you are looking for? Do you have a database set up to tell you which card to pick out when you need a specific image? Maintenance is an essential part of backup. Do you put power on them occasionally to keep them alive? What good is a backup with a limited lifetime?

IMHO the best backup medium is a disk drive.

They are available up to several TBytes. Most people can store their entire photopile on one disk. Only one place to look.

The maintenance comment applies to disk drives as well, but maintenance is easier when you have one item to maintain instead of a box full of them.

I actually have 2 large backup drives, in addition to the SD cards.

Thank you, I do have a LaCie that my time machine backs up to, but it won't have the stuff that is on the external hard drive on it. I'm not sure what you mean by back up my 5TB external to another one via Time Machine....The stuff on the external 5TB is not anywhere on my main computer.

Time Machine WILL back up your external drive(s) if you tell it to. I have used Time Machine to back up both my mac and my two photo drives onto a large LaCie external for years. When one photo drive failed last year I used TM to restore my photos to a new drive quickly and easily.

My secondary backup is to Backblaze, which backs up my main computer and the two external photo drives to the cloud. The first Backblaze backup took a while, but after that it's been quick and easy.

Thanks, I think all this is the way I will be going.
