When you take a photo you have one copy (on the card). When you download them you have two copies. You are backed up. When you format the card you are back to one copy. No backup.

While cards are not a reliable long term (in years) storage solution (they require occasional power application to maintain their memory), they are great backup until you can move the files to a second drive and an online site.

Common 64GB SDXC cards are cheaper than rolls of film, now. They can hold thousands of files, so having a compact, static-free card wallet or plastic case full of them is a good idea. I have a little case slightly larger than the size of a camera battery. It holds eight cards. It's loaded. The cards are numbered. I activate the Write Protect switches on the cards when I remove them from the camera. Full cards are turned upside down in the case, so I know to download them later. I rotate the cards in order. Downloaded and backed-up cards go back in the case, right side up, in order.

My camera has 2 card slots. I format one card and do not format the other which is big enough for several days photos. I keep it till full and then put in another. I only format smaller card.

There are also rumors of a new larger screen iMac maybe 27” but also maybe 32”. I have a 2012 iMac 27” and do not want to go smaller so I am going to wait a while (6 months) to see if the rumors materialize. Also I suspect if they go larger they will include maybe the M3 and larger storage.

Those rumors have been floated for five years. Maybe they will materialize. My take is that 27" would be nice, but marginally better at 5K than the 4.5K 24" iMac. 32" would make more sense.

Expect any larger iMac to be very expensive (no one should buy Apple's base iMac, with just 8GB memory and 256GB storage; it's not a good deal).

Yes, I know but they seem to be stronger lately. And yes 5K would make sense with a 27 or 32 inch screen. I have an LG 5K 27" screen now for my MacBook Pro but it would make a great 2nd screen for any new larger iMac.

For storage I use a pair of OWC Thunderbay 8s with 42 TB of spinning HDs. #1 is backed up to #2 in real time. Off-site storage is bh Backblaze. The Thunderbay 8s with a Thuderbolt 3 or 4 cable are as fast as any internal HD I have ever had.

Your $ = Your choice.

Only OS and applications on my main drive. Apps for anything, not just editing. But any data goes on the external drive.

However, its available on Amazon for just under $1,000.

Back when I got mine they were sold direct by Apple. That was when Apple discontinued their own large display. I can't remember the details now but there was some uproar about Apple discontinuing their own display and they were selling this one at a discounted price of around $600 (which is when I got mine). I have been really pleased with it.
