"I Can't Get Started" 1937 and 2022

I began playing a beat up 2nd hand Conn cornet at 9. The beat up cornet had stuck slides, valves and loose joints, but I played it anyway. I had weekly lessons for $2. My teacher traveled 5 miles by bus to get to my house.
Eventually, I started playing 78' records and tried to teach myself some songs/tunes. It took me awhile but I learned Bunny Berigan's 37' recording of "I Can't Get Started", not exactly how he played it, but the melody was recognizable.

Today, JazzontheTube sent a video of Randy Brecker playing it. Neither Bunny Berigan's or Randy Brecker's versions sounded like me.

Bunny Berigan: https://youtu.be/D1ycvlgrKW4
Randy Brecker: https://jazzonthetube.com/video/i-cant-get-started-2021/

I hope you enjoyed reliving this wonderful composition. I did.

Thanks for viewing,
Mark

Randy is so gifted just like Emmett. What a musical difference between 1937 and 2022.
Many thanks for sharing.

Bunny Berigan was, is one of my all-time favorites. This song has stuck in my mind for many years, thanks for bringing it back to me.

Thanks! I stopped playing 6 years ago and gave my trumpet to my grandson. Another world long gone. 😄

Thanks for the link. Really enjoyed them. I took lessons from an army Sargant at Ft. Crowder, MO. Played with the military prisoners' band a few times. Was just getting into learn arranging when he was transferred. That ended my lessons.

I still have my horn. A Conn 48B Connqueror Bb vocabell. Dad bought it as I remember about 1955 for $125. Haven't played it for a long time, but can't give it up. Last time I tried it, I had lost my lip. 83 years old now. Probably too late to start again.

Like you, I started with the trumpet at age 10, played thru high school. Eventually, I played the baritone horn, trombone, tenor sax, French horn, harmonica, piano, and some kind of mouth harp. I continued into my sixties at which time my lips and lungs would no longer cooperate. Still loving music I switched to the guitar, which I play daily.
Recently listened online to a female trumpeter named Alyson B. Can’t remember her last name, but damn, she can make the trumpet sing.

It's Alison Balsom. She's a classical soloist. I have quite a few of her recordings.
