I can't imagine why any church would want these painted on the building. It seems it would scare people away from their religion, rather than welcoming them in.
Another great series, Mel.
The paintings are amazing. The beheadings were common in Roman times as a way of punishing Christians for nor worshipping Roman gods. Crucifixion was kept for the "worst" criminals. The Romans even tied people to posts, doused them with flammable liquid and set them on fire while alive - just to light the streets. They were an extremely cruel people, those Romans.
One viewpoint could be persecution due to religious differences. I tend to believe that the persecutions were due to the threat to those in power with their unquestioned authority, control, wealth, and the fear of losing it due to opposing upstart interests. In most cases, the bad guys were paid to do evil deeds.
What they have done in the name of religion.
Great captures
O dear, o dear. Those were hard to take in. The paintings portrayed how life was then. The wrong belief could result in death by beheading. Even today, wars break out over religion and beliefs. So sad.
