The entry level is pretty smart on their part along with the features & performance should help with the brand loyalty thing.

I was let-down by two entry- level Rebels in a row, which is why I sold all my remaining Canon equipment and returned to Pentax. That performance-loyalty thing works both directions.

Do you have any stories where you're not the victim?

Just this one - but you keep asking for it.

There’s a guy I keep ‘crossing swords’ with at Pentax Forum. Apparently he knew guys whose ‘investment’ in lenses became worthless when Canon changed mounts in the 1980’s. I happen to believe that was a wise decision, and it made the latest change basically painless, while Nikon can handle only some of their lenses with their adapter. I question the quality of the lower-tier Canon bodies, but they do exist. The issue is some lenses cost so, and have value only if they have a body to work with. Pentax Users say “glass is forever”, but ignore the fact that gradual changes will gradually depreciate their value; for example, even if a Takumar lens delivers the same image it always has, it’ll be less useful because it doesn’t autofocus, and it doesn’t have a modern coating, so a modern lens will be more valuable simply because does have the modern aspects.

So different brands will cost us in different ways, but nothing is cost less.

Cost for us is the obverse side of profit for them.

Yep, the global #1 camera company continues to grow, as announced in their 3Q2023 financial reporting. The camera (Imaging) division is just part of the larger corporate report. Highlights:

The interchangeable lens camera market remains solid, with new products from each company stimulating demand. As a result, we expect the market to be 5.85 million units this year, which is slightly larger than last year.

In the third quarter, our sales of new products such as the EOS R6 Mark II, which was launched late last year, and the EOS R50 and EOS R100, the first entry level models of our EOS R series, which were released in the first half of the fiscal year, increased steadily, and overall unit sales were almost at the same level as last year.

To meet the diverse needs of camera users and to attract new users, we have expanded our mirrorless camera lineup from full-frame to entry-level models. As for interchangeable lenses, we have already added 5 lenses this year and have increased the number of lenses to 38 so far. As a result, we are steadily increasing our share of the mirrorless market through synergy between the camera bodies and lenses.

As the market has recovered to a state where there is enough supply to meet demand, all competitors are gradually increasing sales investments. As a result, in the fourth quarter, which is the year-end selling season, we will increase sales volume with appropriate promotions and aim for 2.9 million units this year.
Yep, the global #1 camera company continues to gro... (show quote)

Thanks for the info Paul

Yes Canon sells the most cameras in the world (if you dismiss smartphone sales, where the vast majority of the world's smartphones use Sony made image sensors and Sony-made cameras, including all your Apple iphones.).

But the reality lost in the gaudy Canon numbers bantered around is the fact, as Tony and Chelsea Northrup and others have recently noted is that Canon's overall sales numbers are over 50% from its DSLR sales, where Canon has 75% of the DSLR sales (impressive).

Sony doesn't sell DSLRs.

The latest CIPA and BCN numbers still show Sony as both the World's #1 seller of mirrorless cameras (non smartphones), and #1 seller of mirrorless cameras (non smartphones) in their home country market of Japan, just a fact. Canon is #2 in mirrorless sales worldwide. And in Japan, Canon is #2 in mirrorless, with Fuji #3 outselling Nikon #4 there in mirrorless.

Canon's OVERALL sales leadership is likely to remain as long as folks are still buying DSLRs.

But the hottest segments of the worldwide camera markets are by far smartphones, and then mirrorless cameras. And in both those segments Sony remains #1 in camera sales, just a fact, look it up.

The countless millions of Apple iphones sold alone pushes Sony worldwide camera sales way above Canon's total worldwide camera sales numbers, DSLRs included.

And with traditional Sony mirrorless cameras still outselling Canon mirrorless cameras worldwide, experts expect that trend to remain

Canon makes some excellent mirrorless cameras now that they have finally gotten on the mirrorless train after a few poor starts.

FYI, I used Canon ,Nikon and Leica pro cameras for over 40+ years and won many National and international Awards with them covering all subjects around the world, including War conflict.

I then moved over to Sony in 2017 where I have continued to make award-winning images.

The Top News Services in the World have moved over to Sony and Nikon mirrorless for all their staffers photographers and staff videographers worldwide.

Associated Press; all Gannett media including USA Today; Canadian Media; UK's Top News Service have all moved over to exclusively Sony gear for all their staff photographers and staff videographers worldwide. AFP (Agence France Presse) helped develop and test the Nikon Z9, and they use the Nikon Z9 for their staffers worldwide.

None of these Top News Services with countless staffers worldwide chose Canon mirrorless for their staffers, none. Just a fact. The 22 photographers of the Los Angeles Times Newspaper did chose Canon mirrorless for their use.

I just have 2022 revenue numbers from Forbes, but here is how much revenue Nikon, Canon and Sony reportedly made from their imaging divisions in 2022:

Nikon- $1.16 Billion USD
Canon- $5.11 Billion USD
Sony- $8.44 Billion USD

And FYI, the total corporate revenue from all Sony divisions in 2022 was over $850 Billion USD, yes $850 Billion USD, according to Forbes.

I am sure that final 2023 revenue figures for Nikon, Canon and Sony will be much better than 2022 as they all have had excellent cameras introduced in the past year, and many lenses and more cameras coming before the Olympics next year.

The latest top ten cameras in sales at Japan's Yodobashi's 23 camera megastores:

1) Sony A7IV
2) Sony A7IV with kit zoom lens
3) Fuji X-T5
4) Canon EOS R6 II
5) Canon EOS R50
6) Sony A7RV
7) Nikon Z8
8) Nikon Zfc
9) Sony A7C
10) Nikon Z50

As a Professor of Photography at a state university, you have Nikon, Canon, Fuji, Sony, Panasonic and Olympus gear we supply for our photo students to use in my classes I teach in Digital Photography, Photojournalism, and 35mm B&W Film photography. Students can use whatever brand they may also have in personal gear and yes they are also allowed to use their smartphones for some photo assignments, but I make sure they are familiar with and can use traditional photography gear and NOT just their smartphones.

Cheers and best to you all, whatever brand you prefer. Use what you love, use what works best for your needs and budget, and be happy.

Receiving awards for photography depends more upon personal ‘eye’ than upon equipment used, and this ‘eye‘ has no connection to one’s choice of equipment.
