Yes Canon sells the most cameras in the world (if you dismiss smartphone sales, where the vast majority of the world's smartphones use Sony made image sensors and Sony-made cameras, including all your Apple iphones.).
But the reality lost in the gaudy Canon numbers bantered around is the fact, as Tony and Chelsea Northrup and others have recently noted is that Canon's overall sales numbers are over 50% from its DSLR sales, where Canon has 75% of the DSLR sales (impressive).
Sony doesn't sell DSLRs.
The latest CIPA and BCN numbers still show Sony as both the World's #1 seller of mirrorless cameras (non smartphones), and #1 seller of mirrorless cameras (non smartphones) in their home country market of Japan, just a fact. Canon is #2 in mirrorless sales worldwide. And in Japan, Canon is #2 in mirrorless, with Fuji #3 outselling Nikon #4 there in mirrorless.
Canon's OVERALL sales leadership is likely to remain as long as folks are still buying DSLRs.
But the hottest segments of the worldwide camera markets are by far smartphones, and then mirrorless cameras. And in both those segments Sony remains #1 in camera sales, just a fact, look it up.
The countless millions of Apple iphones sold alone pushes Sony worldwide camera sales way above Canon's total worldwide camera sales numbers, DSLRs included.
And with traditional Sony mirrorless cameras still outselling Canon mirrorless cameras worldwide, experts expect that trend to remain
Canon makes some excellent mirrorless cameras now that they have finally gotten on the mirrorless train after a few poor starts.
FYI, I used Canon ,Nikon and Leica pro cameras for over 40+ years and won many National and international Awards with them covering all subjects around the world, including War conflict.
I then moved over to Sony in 2017 where I have continued to make award-winning images.

https://petapixel.com/2022/06/09/how-pro-photographers-helped-make-the-z9-from-prototype-to-flagship/I just have 2022 revenue numbers from Forbes, but here is how much revenue Nikon, Canon and Sony reportedly made from their imaging divisions in 2022:
Nikon- $1.16 Billion USD
Canon- $5.11 Billion USD
Sony- $8.44 Billion USD
And FYI, the total corporate revenue from all Sony divisions in 2022 was over $850 Billion USD, yes $850 Billion USD, according to Forbes.
I am sure that final 2023 revenue figures for Nikon, Canon and Sony will be much better than 2022 as they all have had excellent cameras introduced in the past year, and many lenses and more cameras coming before the Olympics next year.

As a Professor of Photography at a state university, you have Nikon, Canon, Fuji, Sony, Panasonic and Olympus gear we supply for our photo students to use in my classes I teach in Digital Photography, Photojournalism, and 35mm B&W Film photography. Students can use whatever brand they may also have in personal gear and yes they are also allowed to use their smartphones for some photo assignments, but I make sure they are familiar with and can use traditional photography gear and NOT just their smartphones.
Cheers and best to you all, whatever brand you prefer. Use what you love, use what works best for your needs and budget, and be happy.
