The only reason not to do it is if you are not planning to keep using Lightroom, and not updating to the latest version. New catalogs can not be read by older versions of the software.
I up graded and all seems fine. While backing up you catalog regularly is always a good practice, do a back up before updating to the new catalog.
Just to clarify, anyone's current and active LRCAT is software version specific. So, there's nothing 'wrong' with making a backup of say LRCAT-v11 before the Adobe software reads LRCAT-v11 and creates a completely new LRCAT-v12, using the v11 as 'input' and leaving that input file in place and 'untouched'. Of course, Adobe doesn't use these clear 'identifiers' in the file names, but the humans involved can easily rename their files to include these 'eye catchers' to help clarify which file is which.
