"Scrap Wood" and Caulking

I watch a lot of woodworking videos on YouTube, and the guys often say they "threw something together" with scrap wood they had lying around the shop. This is usually that beautiful, expensive birch plywood. These guys have better scrap wood than I have new wood. My scrap wood could be mistaken for kindling.

I saw a good video last night about how to preserve a tube of caulking. The guy tested several products, and the one below was his favorite. Surprisingly, he made no humorous comments about applying this product to the tube of caulk.

Another handy item - If the tube of caulking is partially hardened and unusable, cut off the end and put this cap over it. The guy used a tube that had been left open for months. When he cut off the end, the caul inside was still good.

I just ordered both from, Amazon.

Those woodworking guys also just happen to have thousands of dollars worth of tools sitting around.

Yes. There weekend shop is a lot more professional looking than mine. I noticed they all own a 4 or 5000 dollar Sawstop. I wish I could.

I stopped at a motorcycle shop one day back in the early '70s with the parking lot behind the building. I saw a fellow rummaging through the trash of boxes and crates stacked along the dumpster for disposal as he was pulling the cardboard from the wood.

I asked him what he was going to do with all those boards and he told me that the motorcycles were shipped from Japan and the wood they used to build the crates was Philippine mahogany and he built furniture from it and it was all being thrown away.

Amen! I just love it when "This Old House" shows you how to build a cabinet drawer. At some point they'll usually say something like, "Now I'll just run this through my router/planer/joiner table..." inside a shop as spacious as school gym. Sure; but how do I do it with hand tools in my 8' x 12' shop?

There's an awful lot to be said for those who still know how to use hand tools. I watch a lot of woodworking on You Tube and there are a few who use hand tools almost exclusively and some of it is as beautiful as anything you can do with power tools. The skill is amazing. My Late Uncle had that ability. I wish I had paid more attention in class. Alas, my small shop is full of power tools.

Yeah Norm Abrams is a great carpenter but he has way too much specialized tools that most people can't do what he does. Roy Underhill is a great carpenter too and he does most stuff with hand tools but his tools are kinds of special too.

Yes! One guy unpacked his brand new, huge water-cutting machine. I forget the proper term for it. He made all sorts of things with it.
