Booray Perry, professional photographer posted an interesting video on YouTube yesterday that I thought I'd pass along: https://youtu.be/_fOh2LiCc84. If for some reason this link doesn't work, you could watch it on YouTube by searching for APS-C Beats FULL-FRAME.

In a nutshell, he says that advances in technology over the years in sensors, software, and APS-C lenses have enabled APS-C cameras to catch up to FF cameras. So, if you're starting out in digital photography, you should give serious consideration to buying an APS-C camera because they're smaller, less expensive, and now just as good as FF cameras. He says camera manufacturers such as Canon, Nikon, Sony, Fuji are devoting much of their R&D to improving APS-C sensors and lenses because that's where the future is. (And in 5-10 years the same thing will happen with micro 4/3 cameras).

He draws the analogy that that's what happened to medium format cameras, when FF in essence "caught up and was good enough" for the masses. Medium format became "niche" cameras, and the world moved on to FF. He says the same thing has already happened in the world moving to APS-C, camera companies realize this and are making huge investments in APS-C and rolling out more and more APS-C cameras. The general camera community is now starting to realize this.

Just some food for thought, especially for new digital photographers just starting out with their camera/lenses purchases. I certainly don't expect many FF shooters in general to convert to APS-C.

I realize this is just one professional photographer's opinion. Just found the video interesting.

APS-C lenses? Except for Fuji, they are an afterthought.

Micro-four thirds beats full frame. That's the headline.

I use Nikon full frame DSLRs and a Sony RX10m4. Both are good for what I need them to do. They do not replace each other. I shot APS-C until I got a D700 and after that I sold my D200 and D300S because even with both cameras D300S and D700, there was no comparison. Where the difference is primarily is when you make a print. The D700 (and all subsequent full frame cameras) do not need to enlarge the image nearly as much as a APS-C camera thus preserving image quality and detail. Not that I haven't considered downsizing, but for me the D810 and possibly a D850 in the near future, still gets my vote. I shoot a lot of wildlife with long heavy lenses and so far I have yet to see an APS-C professional quality 300mm lens or longer. I don't know if the guy in the video covers this but I got bored after the initial shameless self promotion and first couple of points he made so I got distracted by something else.

Frederick, thanks for the post, nice to know my APS-C sensors (Fuji) cameras are not obsolete (yet) and still fun to use; and the “fun” is the most important thing to me. Heck, I still enjoy the one with a CMOS sensor as well. Let’s keep shooting

IIRC all Fujis have CMOS sensors ?

Not a student of Fujis, so please correct that if not the case. Surely, if there IS a CCD Fuji it would have an obsessed loyal cult following, but that might have flown by me beneath my radar.

User ID, I (think) you are correct about Fiji. Here's my personal line-up to supporting my statements:
Fujifilm X100V
• 26MP - APS-C BSI-CMOS Sensors
Fujifilm X-T2
• 24MP - APS-C CMOS X-TRANS III Sensor
Fujifilm X30
• 12MP - CMOS X-TRANS II Sensor

Thanks for your observation

You left me out as soon as you talked about making prints. I shot slides during the film era, and my viewers sat out behind the projector or further. I want them to see what I was looking at, not “zooming” in to look for details.

He isn't the first to say it, I say hogwash. You spend the extra money for FF to get high resolution, dynamic range and the ability to crop. If you are never going to crop then go to a cropped sensor, the lenses are cheaper as are the cameras. If you want great low light performance and the ability to do some serious cropping yo can't beat FF.

On the road to success, there's no traffic jams on the extra mile, but plenty of full-frame bodies.

The operative concept is that APS-C is "good enough for the masses." It is true that there are many great APS-C cameras and lenses out there that perform well under most circumstances. But the headline "APS-C Beats FULL-FRAME!" is so nonsensical that I will not even attempt to make an argument here.

Beat me to it 2.
"good enough for the masses" means not too bad at 4x6 prints.
It was estimated that 6x6 film was equal to @ 60 to 75 mp. Getting close!
Shoot some Portra 200 thru a medium format. Like my Zeiss. Ooh and ahh.
The Hassy 50C is close- but not enough. Large prints still look a bit "flat"
For most of us, APS is adequate. I don't print larger than 8x11 anyway.
Then again, check the history.
A generation ago, the main biggies were converting their manufacturing from FF to APS.
~FILM~. Still have a Nikon something and a half dozen rolls.
Then Digital happened. Why spend $$$ on the older camera bodies and the bigger sensors?
They already are geared up and gearing up for new light cheap APS cameras anyway.
Tech happens. My D600 FF is basically a D7100 APS with some light changes, same resolution.
Sensors get better. Last 10 years have been great for those who print 4x6s.
When does Canon replace the 5ds with a 60mp Sony FF sensor?
There's a reason real pros use bigger cameras. Like the big Hassy 100C

Yes, once upon a time I found a fully loaded 1977 Ford Pinto with leather, air and power windows was definately superior to a 1960 Cadillac Eldorado Biarritz... not!

The remember the damn thing was smaller, cost less and the salesman swore it had a better ride...

Cameras are still tied to the same physics...

The limitations haven't changed one iota.

Several months ago Sony's CEO was quoted as saying that, in the near future, IQ from the company's camera phones would surpass that from their dedicated cameras. So -- the rampant full-frame snobbery in the camera world
notwithstanding -- this prognostication is entirely credible.

There are even some here who still believe that DSLR technology beats mirrorless!
