recb, thank you for providing that nuanced detail...as an amateur, I don't always think about or know about these subtleties in light. I am appreciative of you comment and grateful that OM-1 will let me adjust the final exposure in real time! Otherwise, I would have had a lot of post-processing to do!

I think I will see what the weight is of my heaviest lens and camera and use that combination extensively when practicing at the zoo! Linda

As you are attending a photo trip, I expect they will cover the light situation and provide tips on settings.
Regarding lens weight, you shouldn't need to do much pure handholding of a long lens. Nathab provide bean bags for cushioning and you can use windows and the outside railing for support. You're just not allowed to drop anything!

I’d probably take both lenses and start with the 40-150 and if not long enough use the 75-300. Presumably it’s daylight so it should be ok. The OM-1 does well at higher ISO so don’t be afraid to bump it up if needed to get a high shutter speed. With long lenses the rule of thumb is 1/focal length (full frame) minimum shutter speed. You might also consider bringing a tripod.

The 12-200 mZuiko gives you the equivalent of a 24-400; that's my walkaround lens; I have a 100-400 mZuiko
for appropriate uses

Thank you burkphoto for the light explanation! I needed to remember that photography is called "painting with light". I know I will lose light when I use the 2x teleconverter so it is reassuring to know that I start with more light! I've been keeping score. It shows that the 40-150 wins -- especially with the teleconverter! Linda

Yep. That sounds like a winning setup to me. Enjoy your trip!

I have been on a "the tundra Buggy " tour. First understand the buggy is very large. the floor inside is about 6ft 4/or 6" above ground level - I am 6ft3" & could stand up straight with with ample head room.
What we were told. once out near the bear area - NO ONE OUTSIDE ., these bears have eaten for months & are simply awaiting the ice to freeze, to go back hunting seals, the show up in and around Churchill because the Churchill River ( fresh H20 ) enters the "BAY" at churchill & sense its is dumping fresh in to the salt bay it freezes before further North. I will add a couple images , 1 will be the inside of BUGGY, 1 is one of a lot of images
2nd image is a Rabbit - I saw several & kept pointing out the rabbit - must others just said they could not see it

Thank you pnbarne! https://backcountrygallery.com/ This is a terrific site for wildlife as you wrote. Steve Perry owns a Nikon. I haven't had time but I will see how his Nikon settings perform on my OM-1 m4/3. I recognize that his Nikon is a full frame...Thank you again. His photos are inspiring!

OMG!!! Your photos are amazing! Thank you for taking the inside of the vehicle too! I researched about the bears. It seems that they are the mother bears with their cubs. The mothers gave birth and kept them until they were old enough to learn how to hunt! I think nature is fascinating. I do appreciate knowing why Churchill is the designated place. I like the outside of the buggy at the back, where it is elevated and open. I've been to Iceland once and Fairbanks Alaska twice to capture the Northern Lights. Finally got them on the third round! We were outside at 2 AM in -20 to -30F! I have the clothes to be outside when it is frigid out. What time did your group leave in the AM to take the photos? It looks dark outside the windows. I am so excited about this trip. Your photos have underscored why it is going to be a fantastic time! I'm only 5'5" so I will have plenty of room!

Thank you again for posting your photos! I found the rabbit (only after reading your hint!) and love the photo of the Polar Bear. (wish there was a smiley for jumping for joy!) Linda

Hello,

I looked for a Wildlife category but couldn't find one. Here's my question. Next November, I am going to Churchill, Canada to take photos of Polar Bears coming out of hibernation with Natural Habitat. I have a M43 OM-1 camera. I am a senior citizen and can no longer hold heavy cameras - even with a mono/tripod. It's a 4/3's so there are not as many pixels to work with...as there are with a full-frame! :(

I have two potential lenses. One is a Olympus 75-300mm (35mm equiv. 150-600mm), f/4.8-6.7, which I wonder if it is too slow. The second lens is Olympus 40-150mm (35mm equiv. 80-300mm) f/2.8. That lens is the heaviest I can use. So, it is a trade-off between distance and light.

Has anyone gone on a shoot like this? Or has any ideas in general? I would appreciate reading your comments and suggestions! Thank you in advance. Linda
Hello, br br I looked for a Wildlife category but... (show quote)

This may be blasphemy to some on this forum, but I say don't knock it until you have tried.

Put you kit on the shelf and get a Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra.

It has four back facing cameras; .6X, 1X, 3x, 10X and interpolates to 100X...the interpolation sweet spot being 30X. The images a very good and if I posted them here most would not be able to tell them from the best large cameras without checking the EXIF data. Google the reviews on YouTube.

For those that are manual mode diehards an alternative is the Sony Experia 1 V. It has all the controls you can want and even a 3X glass zoom lens. Images are even better if you know how. It doesn't have the reach of the Ultra.

And in both cases you can post process the images in camera if you want and send them to you friends or post them here without leaving your vehicle.

And if you need a large photo there is Topaz.

The younger generations are much smarter than we give them credit.
