Alligator and Crocodile

I've never been able to keep the differences between these two reptiles straight. I don't come across either of them in my daily life here in the mountains. However, I did hear a good explanation last night.

If I remember correctly an alligators mouth hinges up and a crocodile's mouth hinges down. Crocs are more aggressive and dangerous.

Only if the gator is on it's back.
The most noticeable difference is that the alligator's mouth is wider than the crocs. A gavial has an even narrower snout and is not what the judge hits the bench with if you let any of them loose in the sewer. That's a gavel.

I was taught as a kid to "Never smile at a Crocodile" it seems that the corner of a Crocodile's mouth flexes into a sort of 'smile' when it is about to open it's mouth.

Don't see many in the U.K. either, but thanks to Sir David Attenborough and the beeb I think I could tell them apart.
