If you're looking for FREE, the DaVinci Resolve is the way to go, as others here have indicated...but at the risk of steep learning curve. I, in the past, downloaded, installed, and tested DaVinci Resolve and didn't like it, so I removed it from my system.

I use Vegas Pro 19. Years ago, it was called Sony Vegas Movie Studio, which I had for many years, but then it got bought out by Magix Corporation and they renamed it simply to Vegas Pro, and with a lot of new and better features. In doing the upgrade, I could have gone to the latest version 21, but at less than 1/2 the price, I elected to get 19, as this does all I'll ever needed without the added expense. I'm not sure if v19 is available from the Magix website, but I think it is available from Amazon.

As an example: Here's one of my videos created with Vegas Pro 19. Note that I intentionally wanted to make it look like one of the old-time silent movies, so I took the color video clips, made those into B&W, removed the sound track, then added a lot of features like jitter, film streaks, specs, speech slides, etc. and then added some old-time piano music as it was in the 1900s. The clothes are not period clothing, only modern day clothes, and of course, modern hospital equipment. Note: for better viewing click the full screen icon on the video below.

I use Adobe Premier. It isn't free and has a pretty steep learning curve, but it's a professional strength tool.

I've played with Microsoft ClipChamp. Its free and its easy to use. If you have a Windows computer, give it a try.

Thanks everyone for all the suggestions! I did try the MS ClipChamp and that was the one that crashed after about an hour of working...so that is not worth it for me. I will try a few of the other suggestions and let you all know which one I finally decide on.

Do you have a Mac computer? If so, iMovie is fairly simple to use and would allow you to do those basic functions. Another possibility would be DaVinci Resolve. The basic one is free.

I use Davinci Resolve the free version. It has everything an amateur would ever need. When you download the free version, you will see what I mean.

I agree with you about the 'monthly cost'. You may find, when you bring the program up again that it has saved your work up to that point. Worth a try.
God Bless,

As for adding a music and sound effects, there is this site with free streams (its from Facebook, but you can use the sounds wherever): https://business.facebook.com/sound/collection/?sound_collection_tab=sound_tracks&asset_id=2561245690711471&reference=artist_attr&__cft__[0]=AZXICAJPpU1Z1c7rzRvL9hH7_zbZ7ZXctA1nvm-2Q1CwXRuYCqWE25wsALGFclxeH8xDVhtm7Po2_alSw3QisBFcjIe2pxOf2vKRbcGv24R9AtW9vzpyadk0is1mmdCsI3V5I0LrHWo2P3XxVRbrB5ZpGZShIsiXrOrasfP7Gq1zDNt6fvA_kSDAVB4GefHtcSs7N4hUmnbX6eyLQUUuD4Z0&__tn__=-UK-y-R

I work with several video professionals in the Seattle area, and they all swear by Davinci Resolve. It has both a paid version and a free one. The free one works just fine.

1.What features and tools are included in VSDC Video Editor?

The program allows users to edit digital video and audio files in various formats including high-definition and ultra-high- definition resolutions, add post production effects and transitions, create slideshows, presentations with the use of 3D diagrams, capture video from screen, record voice, burn discs, save multimedia files to a number of supported formats and publish them on social networks.

4.What is the difference between VSDC Free and Pro solutions?

Both solutions offer a complete multimedia editing suite. VSDC Pro Video Editor provides more options for professional video editing: advanced settings of spline parameters and resizing, higher subpixel resolution, multiple color Chroma key, hardware acceleration and prioritized technical support. This one seems easy to use but not free.

I have a few programs by AMS, and they all work well.
Only think I do not like is they only allow installation on one computer.

Thanks everyone for your responses....I installed DaVinci Resolve and it wasn't that much of a learning curve as I thought...was able to combined 12 videos into one, trim various sections out of each, adjust volume, adjust coloring and export....pretty easy actually!

I use Corel's Video Studio. It's fairly inexpensive, pretty capable and pretty intuitive to use. I can't claim to have experience with many other alternatives, however. Adobe has one and I'm sure the capabilities are greater, but it seemed hard to learn and is considerably more expensive.
