Yes, the dogs are the ones who need adjusting.

I have trained mine to ignore them...but usually they learn it on their own quickly.

They are after grubs, in June and or beginning in July you need to put down Grub control which will kill the grubs and also prevent the Skunks from coming into the fenced area looking for them they can actually smell where they are and if they are eliminated so is your problem, the only other solution is to trap them and get rid of them.

The skunks might be after lawn grubs. If so get Scott's GRUB-X, apply it and water it in. You can check your yard for grubs easily enough, if the turf pulls up like a rug would and you see plenty of grubs there's your problem.

There are Nature's Miracle (brand name) products that do a good job of neutralizing skunk odor.

As an aside, you might recall from Gen. Psychology 101 that earthworms learn not to get on a copper grid because the scientist will shock them. Behavioral stuff. I had a schnauzer that got sprayed several times, he wouldn't learn that a black kitty with white stripes means a Nature's Miracle bath. He's not as smart as an earthworm.

…I agree…get rid of the food source…Try to identify any possible food sources that may be strewn around your yard…if they are digging up your lawn it is most likely grubs…Look for and clean up bird seed, fallen fruits, leaves, and twigs, pet food, seeds, nuts, berries, and more...

A pellet rifle and a laser pointer will do the job. Sometimes you have to man up.

I have a problem with skunks in my yard at night. I live on a 1 acre property in the California foothills. About half of it is fenced so that my two dogs can't get out, but skunks can walk right through the fence to get in. I just watched one do just that. It went under my car to get out of the light I had just turned on. One of my dogs got it once, the other twice. I can't tell you how horrible that is, having to wash the dogs in hydrogen peroxide, baking soda and dish soap. It is impossible to get all of the smell off, and they smell for a couple of weeks afterward.

I have been putting down skunk repellant for the past two weeks, and every morning I find new holes in my yard where they're digging for whatever they eat. Has anyone else had to deal with this? I've done Google searches, and aside from skunk repellant, there are recommendations for putting down animal urine, ammonia, vinegar etc. Amazon sells motion sensor lights to put around your property to make them leave.

Animal control will trap them and kill them. I'm not keen on that, but I'm getting desperate. If anyone has successfully gotten rid of these critters, tell me how it was done.

We sometimes get skunks in our yard in a city in CA to say nothing of your area near mountains or hills. We keep our two hound breed dogs in the house with us at night and they sleep with us and don't get much chance to Skunk hunt.

Aside from the problem with the dogs, the skunks have dug hundreds and hundreds of holes on my property over the past 2-3 months.

You might have grubs in the soil that they will dig for. I have the same problem. There is an environmentally safe grub treatment that you can use, but it might take a couple of applications before it works. Check your hardware store.

We also feed the birds and any droppings the skunk shows up at night for dinner. It makes quite a mess of our lawn.

I have tried animal repellent and moth balls but it doesn’t seem to deter them.

I will try the orange peels though.

Good luck.

A small line of used motor oil along the perimeter is what I use and it keeps them out.

I've read that to get rid of skunk's denning on your property is to play heavy bass music (they gave John Phillips Souza as an example) at dusk. They will leave in a few days?

We have St. Bernards. They simply eat the critters!

Hopefully you won't have to use it but Listerine in a spray bottle works pretty good after you have bathed them. After the bath spray them very well with Listerine and towel dry. Then spray them a couple times a day and towel dry. The alcohol in the Listerine cuts the oil and provides a fresh scent. I feel your pain. Lol. My husky was in mid air when she got sprayed. It was hilarious. She was trying to back up in mid air. Funniest thing I've ever seen. Lol.

Our dogs can't or won't hold it all night long if they don't go out before we go to bed. They have to go out once after dark when the days get shorter.

I'm thinking a .22 would take care of the problem.

Third suggestion along those lines. Not going there yet. I'd have to stay up all night.
