On Nikon S is shutter priority, A is aperature priority, etc. No odd sounding names for the functions.

Wisdom is knowing which camera brand to never use.

Which is better… mirror or mirror less… i’ve owned a canon and do like it… but have wondered if nikon is more user friendly?

Most here won’t accept that for 90% of subjects, Auto mode is as good as human intervention. Today’s cameras know when it’s an action shot vs landscape vs night scene vs close-up vs etc. The problem isn’t camera friendliness, it’s people not being friendly to new ideas.

Sony RAW files have a lossy compressed setting that's as bad as shooting JPEG.

Can someone please tell me what argument the propeller-headed geek gave as to why a lossy setting for RAW files is a good idea?

Full Auto is good for quick snapshots but it removes the ability for you to use your creativity and have your "vision" show in the image.

I sort of agree. 90% of the time full auto mode + post-processing is capable of producing the photographer's vision. 10% of the time non-full-auto camera setting and post-processing are needed.

I think Nikon’s menus are more understandable…but I’m a Nikon guy…and I’m sure that Canon or Sony or Fuji or whatever shooters would say theirs are better…it’s what you are used to that’s the best. That said…if you decide on something besides your phone…get mirrorless because DSLRs take fine pictures like they always did…but there will be no new DSlRs made and few to no software updates. Mirrorless is where all the R&D money is and because of better sensors and better processors most offer more features and better high IsO and low light performance…and mirrorless lenses are generally better, smaller, and lighter than their DSLR brothers because better optical design software and computers. To be honest…you can’t go wrong with any of the major brands. You need to decide what kind of images you want to make…which will drive choices like getter AF or not, higher frame rate or not, etc. Then factor in your budget for body, lenses, batteries, and cards and figure out which body in the major brands fits your needs, physical abilities, and budget. Then…you’re ready to pick a brand..and this is best done by going to the store and handling your models of choice…and get whatever brand feels better in your hands. Button location, edge sharpness vs roundedness, and the like will reveal which one feels right…and then buy that one and skip ll the my brand is better replies. And BYW…ignore Chg Canons trolls.

Of course…just like Apple has been proudly doomed since the 1980s. Troll.

Human intervention is the whole point of photography. Otherwise why not just stay home and buy postcards? Of course, a human would need to buy the postcards, and look at them. Or maybe that could be automated, too.

What human would be friendly with ideas for eliminating humans?

I'm "Old School " (pre- software days) and have used software since 2003. I feel its just now in the infancy of being able to do everything, but I'll aways try to do as much as possible before I press the shutter, just to spend moew time behind the camera than in front of a monitor. It's just my personal preference.

You must have some new camera I don't know about. In auto mode I must still decide what to shoot and decide on the composition.

Good point! We need to automate that as well.
