Sometime its the purpose for which the object was created. An artist and a craftsperson, both potters, are working side by side at their wheels and each create two ceramic pots with lids. The artist says "I have an idea, I'll sign one of your pots and you sign one of mine. I'll take your pot I signed and put it up for sale with the one I made. And you do the same, you take the pot I made that you signed and put it up for sale with the one you made. Assuming that the pots were all of the similarly high quality construction and design and all would look good in the display case or would work good for cooking beans in the oven. How would you distinguish art from craft in a situation like that. The same pot that was made as an object d'art, if you will, would be worth more than if it were sold as a bean pot.

Art is perception. Many years ago (50+) my wife and I were taking a college Phys Ed class together - American Country Dance. The instructor as a good looking young guy, and several times he picked my wife as a dance partner. The main component in our grade for the class was a paper, I wrote both (I was good a writing research papers).

I put her name on one, and mine on the other one. She got an A, I got a C.

You said "the main component" but it was a dance class so dancing must have counted towards the grade. Is it possible she was a better dancer and that's why the difference in grades?

I'd say our dance skills were fairly equal. After college we were active square dancers for quite a few years.

Bob, since you didn't use "quote reply" we can't be sure of whom you are referring. I hope its not me because I thought your question was an interesting one. However if you are answering "nikonbrain" who snidely said that if you have to ask what fine art is, you probably aren't doing it or words to that effect, then I agree with you.

I don't think it was targeted at you. He is very good at using quote reply when he wants to reply specifically to one person. And he likes to joke around. I think that was a general answer to the question "what makes fine art".

What makes an image "fine Art"?

A friend once quipped, "The only difference between art and exercise is the frame."

Perhaps the case, but no signs that anyone really cares about that.

Cooking beans in an art pot shows good taste. OTOH, beans cooked in a bean pot taste good.
