I am old enough to recall what the South was and what many would like to return to. Too many must have an agreed-on inferior so they can feel superior. Not justified, but rather an addictive "group think".

I have a lovely pigmented lady friend of island heritage. She prefers to live abroad saying that America is too dangerous for those of color, even if the color is light, especially for the very intelligent. Well-spoken educated "blacks" are "uppity" as is said.

In March 1939, a 23-year-old Billie Holiday walked up to the mic at West 4th's Cafe Society in New York City to sing her final song of the night. Per her request, the waiters stopped serving and the room went completely black, save for a spotlight on her face. And then she sang, softly in her raw and emotional voice: "Southern trees bear a strange fruit, Blood on the leaves and blood at the root, Black body swinging in the Southern breeze, Strange fruit hanging from the poplar trees..."

When Holiday finished, the spotlight turned off. When the lights came back on, the stage was empty. She was gone. And per her request, there was no encore. This was how Holiday performed "Strange Fruit," which she would determinedly sing for the next 20 years until her untimely death at the age of 44.

Great composit Jack and a good reminder of the Billy Holiday performance of "Strange Fruit".

Thank you posting. I'm always amazed how inhuman we can be to other members of humanity.

Unfortunately the saying "The song remembers when" applies here. But what a poignant reminder in a very powerful song.

Amazing Lady and amazing song. Thanks for looking and listening

I heard Buffie St. Marie sing in Toronto in the late 60s or early 70s in a 'hole in a wall' type of establishment. The song was 'Universal Soldier'... I suspect I know the kind of shivers Holiday's song produced...

I heard Buffie St. Marie in Los Angeles in 1967. She sang "Dress maker", I have tried to find that song but no luck.
