New firmware posted at Nikon. Includes an update for Bird and Airplane recognition for AF feature. Steve Perry released a video about it as well.

It is nice to see Nikon try to keep up with Sony and Canon. I applaud them for there tireless effort to catch up.

I will download it today and install it on my Z9. Note that it has added birds and airplanes. Animals is still a choice. My guess is that for some long necked birds, you will need to figure out which setting works best, birds or animals.

I watched Steve Pery's you tube vid. For long necks he suggests large area wide & I believe animal detect.

I installed it yesterday with no issues. One of the quirks of the Z9 AF system up until now is that I could not get it to lock on some long beak wading water birds, like American Bitterns, especially when my subject does not fill the frame. Not a big deal because going to spot focus does the trick. I'm hoping bird AF fixes it.

I installed it yesterday on my Z9. It took about 5-6 minutes to update. All went well during the update. I hope to try out the new Bird recognition feature today when it stops raining. I will try it on hummingbirds in my backyard if there are still around. I plan on using Auto Area, Wide and 3D and see what happens. Prior to the update, I have had the best success with Wide.

Tried it yesterday and it's definitely an upgrade. One question: Are the new modes included in the "auto" menu choice? I know it's slower, but I still use it when shooting surfing where the occasional pelican floats by...
