Texas plants flag on Fronton Island, cartel hotspot

At the direction of Governor Greg Abbott, members of the DPS claimed Fronton Island in the Rio Grande in order to discourage and end cartel activity there.

If the island is ours, why did it need to be claimed? Isn't that a term normaly used to indicate conquest? If they really have evidence of these activities why haven't they done something real about it rather than a feel good gesture such as planting a flag. One thing I immediatly noticed when visiting Texas was how common it was to see giant texas flags standing alone with no US flag in sight. I noticed it because I'm not used to seeing a state flag flying alone. I didn't see any Texas flags flying above a US flag, but that doesn't mean they aren't there.
