Are trucks getting smaller

Sadly, compact pick-ups that make sense for a do-it-yourselfer are a thing of the past, which is why I am so glad I kept my '85 Nissan King Cab. A full six-foot bed and a low gate height make this perfect for my needs. How else could I have got 16' long livestock panels home (to turn into tomato cages)? Or gravel for a retaining wall? Over the years it has helped me transport all manner of heavy and bulky materials. While it was initially my daily driver, I eventually retired it to weekend duty. The fact that virtually every time I use it now, guys are asking me if I would sell it, tells me there is a large market for these smaller trucks. Too bad the auto makers can't seem to understand that.

I feel the same way. A truck is for hauling stuff. My 2009 Silverado only has 2 doors and a V-6 but it's got an 8ft bed.

That driver could have just as easily cracked the tonneau cover, left the tailgate up carried that board with no more that 3' sticking out, if the bed was empty. Guess only he knows why he did it.

I've always had a pickup, small, midsize or large for various tasks and for vacation trips/travel. I absolutely love the idea of having a vehicle that gives me loads of options from utility work around the homestead to going to places while on vacation where I couldn't take a standard automobile or minivan. Just purchased a full-size F-150, 4X4, Hybrid, loaded, my choice, my money and LOVE it. Could I have bought a LARGE Surburban or Expedition? Sure, but since its only my wife and me, over kill. Its still America and we're free to choose what to drive or what to buy. Besides, since I live in Florida, I can power the majority of my house with this "PICKUP TRUCK" in the event of a hurricane. Different strokes for different folks, its what makes America great.

Why would I want to scratch the bed liner when I can scratch the cab?

I was thinking the same, if the board moves much, he will find a big sanded area on his truck.

I have a 2011 Tacoma, extended cab, 6 ft bed, but crew cab only came with 4 ft bed in off road model (armour plated underneath, oil pan, gas tank protected, etc.). Tacoma seems much larger than older ones, but small next to many pickup trucks today. Called mid-sized at time.

Had a 1992 Tacoma 4X4 extra cab w/6' bed (standard). Drove it for years and gave it to my daughter who used it for her college years, ended up w/over 200,000 miles. still small compared to today's Tacoma. Good thing with this small pickup with buckets and jump seats, she couldn't haul all of her friends around and many of them wouldn't drive a standard shift....
