Hi, In the middle of October I intend to travel by car from NY to Montreal. I would appreciate any ideas of interesting places to stop and visit in between. Places that I should try not to miss. Round trip will be around ten days and using a different route coming back. Thank you very much
Don't forget your passport.
Take state highway and roads. Stay off Interstate highways and see America.
This past summer, went from Florida to Quebec and back on US highways.
Great trip
Thank you for your response and yes I intend to do exactly that.

Wife and I took a longer trip back in late 2019, western PA to SD and back. We travelled for almost three weeks and just followed our noses with the exception that we wanted to see Mount Rushmore. My suggestion is to do likewise. We did travel along Imterstate highways, but we left that beaten path fairly frequestly. One of our best vacation trips ever. Good luck and may you have safe passage throughout the trip. Oh, take many photographs to share.
Thank you very much for the advice, I will certainly considered it. I do appreciated your wishes and of course I will take lots of pictures.

I suggest you drive through Vermont, get on the Road 100 which starts at Wilmington and continue driving north. This is the most beautiful road in Vermont. it merges with HWY 91 near Lowell, which will take you to Drummondville, Quebec and from there by TransCanada HWY to Montreal. I am going to drive along Road 100 in a week on a round trip from Quebec city. I hope to see a lot of fall foliage, my camera is itching to start clicking :)
Excellent information since my intentions were to pass by Vermont and like you watch and take pictures of the fall foliage. Thank you so much, this definitely helps.
Where in NY is Montreal to the northwest?

Perhaps if you are on the eastern end of Long Island one might stretch and call it northwest otherwise it is just north.
Ok - I'm in the middle of Long Island so...I don't know

Years ago, my family and I did a loop around Lake Erie. We stopped at varying points that were indicated on maps (Pre-GPS) of the areas. One place in Quebec I wish we could have traveled to is Quebec City. Unfortunately, it was too Eastern-ly to fit our time constraints at that time. If you can include Quebec City, I understand that it is like taking a trip across the pond.
Ottawa, Canada, is also a great place to visit while running up Ottawa-Gatineau-Hull area.
(If you get to Ottawa, check out the Hull–Chelsea–Wakefield Railway.)
A good river to follow is the Hudson river, stopping at West Point, NY, to check it out.
Enjoy whichever route you choose. Keep in mind to stop and check even the roses.
Thank you Stephan, yes Quebec City is in our itinerary, it wasn't a first but we changed our mind and with your commentaries it seems is the right the decision. We will consider Ottawa, hopefully we have the time to go there in our way back to NY from Montreal. Thank you again for taking the time to answer.
