i have used view NX, view nx2. I deleted them. I couldnt do anything but open files to look at.

Currently have capture nx-d on desktop,, but its worthless. It wont open any NEF file made with my D7500. Wants me to download something from the Nikon website that doesnt exist on the nikon website..

I read your comment and wonder what you're doing / not doing correctly. From the nikonusa.com website, you can navigate to the support / downloads section of the D7500 DSLR and eventually find the Nikon Studio v1.4.1 free download. This software supports NEF & NRW (RAW) files from the newest mirrorless cameras through ancient 1999 digital image files (DSLR).

I use NX Studio on my computers mostly to view and cull images as it does this faster than a lot of other programs. I process most of my raw files in DXO- photo lab 6. Some use it just for Nikon transfer, to download and rename images. I think it’s slideshow program is excellent. Sometimes I use it to process raw files and make jpegs.

ill look into it, but heres a classic question you may laugh at..

I had grapefruit for breakfast ...

I found and downloaded the v1.4.1 software earlier today. It ran an update to my existing v1.2 version. I don't have a Nikon body to test the transfer process, but I did confirm what can be 'saved' from editing a NEF file from my inventory. Let's assume getting v1.4.1 will be helpful for your D7500.

It is free, download it and give it a try to see what you think of it. Some use it and like it and others don't.

There is one major benefit from Nikon NX Studio, and any other similar software from a camera,s manufacturer. When it reads the raw files downloaded, it will read all of the camera shooting data for that image. If you are the type of photographer that tries to get it all right in the camera, and make setting adjustments in camera, you may need minimal to no processing adjustments. Something like NX Studio may be all that you need.

I have a friend of mine that shoots jpeg only with his Canon bodies and lenses. He is mostly a bird photographer and his jpeg images right out of the camera are excellent. The key is to find the “system” that works best for you. And make sure you know how to use it. System covers everything from equipment to computers to software.

When I went to an MILC (Zfc) my existing software couldn't read the RAW files. Nikon's does so that's the benefit I use. (Yes, I'm too cheap to keep upgrading PSE.)

You buy a new camera? You shoot in RAW? You only use free software? That's success? What?

Dear Chg_Canon,
Regrettably I must inform you that I failed to select a Canon body; however I jumped into mirrorless with both little toes. Nevertheless, my images are not such a level of artwork that deserves more outlay on processing software, at least in my current stage of development. Besides, I believe that Nikon software will keep up with Nikon's image versions more readily that 3rd party software. Finally, since you say that my artistic creativity will take a "great leap forward" since I now can shoot with an MILC. Quoting the emperor in "Amadeus" - "There it is!"

Dear Chg_Canon, br Regrettably I must inform you ... (show quote)

Even if you don't see the Canon light, I do hope you're trying more than just the crude and free Nikon software. Alas, if you're outputting JPEGs, just using the camera setting Studio picks up, why not save an entire step and shoot in JPEG?

REF the latest JPG vs RAW thread elsewhere ....

Now, I took your advice and visited the RAW JPEG thread and then took a shot today in both and used NX studio to work my admittedly limited PP skills to compare the SOOC jpeg with my PP'd RAW image. At high magnification I could see a small difference. I don't doubt that an expert in PP work with his or her own preferred program could make a more dramatic difference. Maybe 1% of my keepers would be worth that effort. However, When I do a less than Adequate exposure job, I think that RAW gives me a better chance of recovery. I'll post a better reply when I have some examples to work with (currently on the road.).

Has anyone noticed that when photogrpahing black birds, like a crow, that the jpeg options DO NOT get any feather detail? But the inglorious RAW does?

Also, has anyone noticed that with nikon, that the same image shot as raw and jpeg at same time, the jpeg will have exif data roughly 20% to the left of what the RAW image will?
