I understand 'Rap' is for those that can't understand 'Country and Western'

Most on UHH are familiar with my music preferences. My response to the post and Keith Richards is this live broadcast during the Pandemic. In my opinion this is representative of quality music performed by well schooled and knowledgeable musicians. Keith also liked jazz for the same reasons.

I don't know.

Rap is very economical. Whole songs with only one note (at most).

========
Johnny Cash made a career for decades with "one note." But, nobody put more. FEELING into that note! And, THAT, my friends IS music! The Navajo; the Arapajo; and, the Zulu, et al did the same . . .And, made MORE music. The Family Bach "explored" a note or two; and, created more music! Paraphrasing Justice Potter Stewart: "I know it when I hear it!"

I believe it was Judge Judy who said: "Don't pee on my leg; and, tell me it's raining!"

To me rap is bad poetry set to worse music. Nothing to recommend it except it is a means of expression for a minority group.

Exactly! I do a lot of whistling, but never rap. Will there be a rap oldies station in the future?

Hah! I keep waiting for the easy listening version of Stairway to Heaven.

There was a group called The Replacements a few years back that did a very low key version of The Ramones’ I Wanna Be Sedated. Makes you rethink some of this conversation.

I was waiting for your response Mark, knowing what it was probably going to be. Thanks for not disappointing and for the link.

Get ready for all the anti-rap comments from the 80-plus Geritol crowd. Sorry, but Tommy Dorsey has long been out of style.......Get over it, just because you don't get it.

I guess I'm among the 80-plus Geritol crowd you referenced. What you probably know about music can be summarized in a small one page pamphlet, similar to the knowledge and demonstration of musical ability of most of the current popular artists. It's rhythm, but lacks any resemblance to music.

Mark "Geritol".

Rolling Stones guitarist Keith Richards expressed his distaste for “cheap” pop music and rap, explaining, “I don’t really like to hear people yelling at me.”

“I don’t really like to hear people yelling at me and telling me it’s music, aka rap. I can get enough of that without leaving my house,” Richards said of rap music to the Telegraph in a recent interview.

The guitarist was discussing different music genres ahead of the release of his band’s next album, Hackney Diamonds — its first studio record in 18 years. Richards noted that he listens to a wide variety of music, including blues, jazz, and classical — but that there are two genres in particular that he is not fond of.

In addition to rap, Richards also doesn’t enjoy pop music, which he said has “always been rubbish,” because it is made “as cheap and as easy as possible,” and he would rather hear music that actually involves “people playing instruments.”

“I don’t want to start complaining about pop music,” Richards said. “It’s always been rubbish. I mean, that’s the point of it. They make it as cheap and as easy as possible and therefore it always sounds the same; there’s very little feel in it.”

“I like to hear music by people playing instruments,” the guitarist added. “That is, I don’t like to hear plastic synthesized muzak, as it used to be known, what you hear in elevators, which is now the par for the course.”

There are 3 aspects of music: melody, harmony and rhythm. Rap only has 2 of them and I do miss the melody.

More Keith:

“what rap did that was impressive was to show there are so many tone-deaf people out there.”

He continued: “All they need is a drum beat and somebody yelling over it and they’re happy. There’s an enormous market for people who can’t tell one note from another.”

And what you know about marketing/music can be summed in one word: None. Go fire up your Lawrence Welk re-runs, geezer. Literally millions listen to rap and buy a gazillion songs, but because you don't like it, so it can't be "music." People have dissed jazz and rock for the same reason. Not your generation, homie, so don't worry about it.
