Hate to see all the negativity regarding one of the great cities of the world, Mexico City and environs. For the Americas, few places are more historically important, interesting and photography rich than this city and its environs, especially out toward Puebla. Some have already noted highlights, but I would recommend walking the length of Reforma, which will give you a taste of great public art, historically significant buildings and the vibrancy of a rich, deep culture. Carry your camera discreetly; cover its brand markings; use a smallish zoom, e.g., 18-55 mm f2.8. Be alert and move confidently. You’ll be fine. I have some experience with this.

You should try North Korea for your next trip. I hear the fried rats are rather good.

Well this is an encouraging reply. Have you been the to either places lately ? I have been to Mexico city and I said what I said previously.
Going anywhere one needs to be aware of where you are going.
Just look at some the blue run cities in America, whattya say to this ?
The man is going and we are all here to help him, Ok !
I encourage useful replies to help him have a nice trip and we should look forward to some pictures.
So, fried rats ? well I have read China has some really good ones plus insects and other stuff we normally just step on.
Peace out bro.
Bruce.

My wife and I spent a day there in February. Enjoyed walking around Roma Norte and Coyoacan neighborhoods. Frida Kahlo museum and Coyoacan market were highlights. Stumbled into a native American dance event that any photographer would love. Ubered around. Never felt unsafe in these places.

Rats and insects are the normal diet for North Koreans but not by choice. The folks are starving. North Korea is not a safe place even for North Koreans. I have a friend who is a North Korean defector. You do not want to hear the stories of torture, rape and murder.

I have traveled to quite a few countries some ruled by evil dictators. I must say the folks were poor but generous and kind. These countries were safe for me as a guest. Indeed safer that the USA as I was an honored guest, there for professional and business purposes. There are also rather primitive countries where the folks are nice and the surroundings pleasant and peaceful. Be sure to visit St.Helena Island in the South Atlantic.

Mexico is, however, not a safe place. Even the Mexican government is not in control of the north or south. Mexico is also responsible for importing slaves (sex and labor) and lethal drugs in to the USA.

I totally agree about walking la Reforma. And visit the Casa de Azulejos when you're near.
