I only have 2 issues with the genre:

1. It being referred to as 'Music'.

2. Its name is misspelled. The 'C' has been inadvertently left off as the first letter!!

While I largely agree that rap is lousy music at best when I saw “Hamilton” I had to change my tune(pun intended) at least temporarily.

I Totally Agree with Kieth and others on this thread, but I Will say, that the First Rap song I was introduced to was "Rapper's Delight", by the Sugar Hill Gang, ( around 14.5 minutes!) - I STILL love the song, and will listen to it maybe once or twice a year. - It's FAR Different than the stuff that came out later, without all of the Hateful Lyrics!
( Check it Out!) - ( https://youtu.be/rKTUAESacQM ) - A Fun, Finger Poppin' Tune!

JMHO...to me it's worse than low-class garbage. My goofy parrot screaming for me as I leave the room sounds better to me. In fact, it's hard for me to think of anything that sounds worse than RAP!

Rolling Stones guitarist Keith Richards expressed his distaste for “cheap” pop music and rap, explaining, “I don’t really like to hear people yelling at me.”

“I don’t really like to hear people yelling at me and telling me it’s music, aka rap. I can get enough of that without leaving my house,” Richards said of rap music to the Telegraph in a recent interview.

The guitarist was discussing different music genres ahead of the release of his band’s next album, Hackney Diamonds — its first studio record in 18 years. Richards noted that he listens to a wide variety of music, including blues, jazz, and classical — but that there are two genres in particular that he is not fond of.

In addition to rap, Richards also doesn’t enjoy pop music, which he said has “always been rubbish,” because it is made “as cheap and as easy as possible,” and he would rather hear music that actually involves “people playing instruments.”

“I don’t want to start complaining about pop music,” Richards said. “It’s always been rubbish. I mean, that’s the point of it. They make it as cheap and as easy as possible and therefore it always sounds the same; there’s very little feel in it.”

“I like to hear music by people playing instruments,” the guitarist added. “That is, I don’t like to hear plastic synthesized muzak, as it used to be known, what you hear in elevators, which is now the par for the course.”

I don't have any love for Rap either, but I won't go so far as to say it's not music. Much of it is very clever, with extraordinary rhythms and rhyme schemes. Richards is a fine musician, far better than I am, so his opinion, all other things being equal, is probably more valid than mine. So if you read this reply already, you just wasted your time.

With very few exceptions, I just don't like rap. Although some of it is music, much of rap is like -- I don't know what to call it -- performance poetry? For the latter type of rap its best to not try to think of it as music bc its not.

But most popular music today that is endlessly pushed on the radio is simplistic angsty rubbish. Forgettable rock and pop songs from the 60s and 70s is like g.d. Mozart compared to what is played on repeat on top 40 now. There are exceptions, but not many.
With very few exceptions, I just don't like rap. A... (show quote)

How about calling it ignorant vulgarity? Extreme respect for women? Recognizing the need for authority?

I like both kinds of music: Country AND Western.

Ok, no…rock, jazz, blues, folk, classical, bluegrass…that works for me. And a special place in my heart for WAP by Cardi B, which really should be the new national anthem for its wholesome expression of family values (ok, more snark here).

To Keith’s point, I said the same thing over 30 years ago: I don’t like to be yelled at.

As for pop, fine that people enjoy it, but quit lowering the bar telling me disposable things are high art.

Thanks for posting Keith's comments on rap. I've read the whole thread & it's interesting... My question is what's next? Disco & punk rock went away soon enough in the 80's... At any rate, I hope it's soon! LOL
