I wasn’t a fan of the new format section at first. With the addition of the “filter by section” facility at the top of the page which drops down an interactive menu, I now am sold on the new format.

Yes, I am aware of that option and have used it, but the previous format was much better. What advantage does this new format offer? It is another case of change for the sake of change even though it is unpopular.

Your screenshot seems to be of a regular forum page. I think you need to be in the Digest to see the “Filter by section” option .

Look at the bottom of the page. There's a link to the latest digest there. That page is where you will see the option.

Admin has reasons for the change and has posted them https://www.uglyhedgehog.com/t-786682-1.html.
As far as being unpopular, we have no metric to judge that although Admin does have access to the site metrics. There are a lot of threads complaining about it but I have not seen the total number of users of the digest so we can't compare complaint numbers with user numbers. Usually people who are satisfied do not post about it.
And the only universal constant is change. A format change of one app is minor compared to OS changes, which happen relatively often.

IMHO, as you said, "Why fix something that WASN'T BROKEN in the first place?" Now, I have to go to UHH, then press one button to get to another topic and then go back to the original space to press even another button to go to another topic. Such a waste of time and effort. The original way was to press the appropriate button to take you to the topic you wished to view. Not at all confusing as it is now.

Adding another button to click to see things the way they used to be doesn't absolve the irritation of unnecessarily changing a well-liked format.

Yes, good analogy, I had a system depending on how much time I had on any given day to read the posts that I am interested in, and later that day time allowed I could come back and finish....... now its more difficult to find where I left off.

If UHH was trying to wean me off this great forum, they are succeeding. I probably used to spend too much time enjoying my wandering thru the various postings, but that is no longer a problem. Incidentally, the title of this post is verbatim what I sent to admin a few days ago. What was the problem before?
