A ring light is not the best choice for event photograhy- there is no advantage in lighting quality, lighing form, or exposure accuracy.

A simple setup wiht a good Speedlight, either direct or modified, is more practical. if you want better lighting quality, you might consider a second off-camer light.

Erratic exposure has nothing to do, specifically, with the type of flash used. your issues may be in your meter system setting. Try one of the other matrix or combined reading settgs rather than spot reading. If the meter is reading in the wrong area you can get subject failure which causes exposure inaccuracy.

He has a mirrorless camera. An rather expensive one at that. The viewfinder with the histogram does a great job of evaluating exposure. Do not forget about exposure compensation.

You are right that other meter modes can help too.

I have no experience with an R3. Please take my advice with a grain of salt. I never liked bounce flashes. In part I was never properly taught. As such, my photos with flash are poor. As such I have used a video light. That too was sub-optimal. I tried a ring flash. It worked very nicely photographing orchids.
For the most part, I will keep my camera (5DIV) on Manual and play with the ISO. An important addition to your bag would be a light meter. Keep a Sekonic Twinmate nearby. It will help you adjust and familiarize your self with your camera’s capabilities. Good Luck!
