If buying for Canon Cameras is it Canon, Tamron or other?

I think you will have all different answers. Some like me will say Canon although I am not a Canon user but I never buy third party lenses. Some would say Tamron is good but then many would say other brands like Sigma are better.
In the end I don't think you will find the answer to your question.

I have a Sigma 18-200 that I use exclusively.

It depends on your needs and desires.

Buying the same brand lens as the camera does not guarantee the best results although as a general rule there are reasons why one might want to do this.

Research the choices using sites like DP Review that will allow you to make an educated decision as to image quality and those things that are important to you. For some folks, saving hundreds of dollars is a good trade for a tiny bit less IQ.

It just depends on your needs.

This is a really good answer.

I have a Nikkor 18-200mm zoom that has failed. It's not a great lens, and I don't use it often, but when I need it, it can be "just right. It was discontinued by Nikon long ago and is no longer supported.

I can't find anyone willing to even look at trying to repair it, and possible replacements all seem to be very well used. Many are quite rough. None are what I'd want to buy.

Tamron makes a lens with the same performance parameters. I'm guessing that it probably delivers completely acceptable results. Problem is that everything about the Tamron is different from my broken lens...ring location, ring direction of operation...everything. It's also different from my other Nikon lenses, and it's all plastic. Just won't work for me.

You might have different expectations and needs. I suggest that you look for yourself and see what fits your needs and budget best.

I have a couple others: Tamron, Vivitar (Rokinon), and they are good lenses, but I’m replacing them with Canon steadily.

I have a T3i and 80D, and also a T90 for film. With adapters I can cover both media types with a range of lenses from fisheye to 500mm, plus I have 1.4x and 2x converters.

I feel happy being a Canon purist, and can use both media types on a single shoot.

Lens choices are determined by.

1. the mount required.
2. What you want to photograph. This will determine the focal length and necessary maximum aperture.
3. your budget.

All modern lenses ( and a lot of old ones too) are capable of making great photographs.

These are very good points and one of the reasons why my crop sensor is a D 7100 and the full frame is a D 750, both have internal focusing motors that will allow me to use Nikon's legacy glass. The old stuff is cheap, readily available because of the move by many, to mirrorless, and they still make killer images.

The point is, I suppose, to not discount anything because it is not the latest and greatest. You have choices.

Other brands like Tamron and Sigma have regular and high end models. The higher models are top notch, the regular are good. So far none have fully automated RF lenses for Canon's mirrorless cameras, but EF types with Canon's EF-RF adapters work fine.

Thank you, it’s good to be back. I’ve been a little tied up with health and domestic stuff, but there is some interesting looking light at the end of the tunnel.

I have cataract surgery coming up and that will get me back to driving again. So I’ve been getting all my gear ready and will use some photography trips to get out and about again.

I’m really looking forward to that.😀😺

Some are Ford, Chevy, Dodge or foreign. Just make sure it your cameras mount. They all have their regular and top of the line lenses.
