Black Water in Snow Globe

One of the snow globes I made at the beginning of the year now has black water. The second one is getting dark. I used distilled water, but I guess that wasn't being cautious enough. I'll have to rethink my plan to start snow globe production.

If I make another one, it will be dry inside. It will look the same, but there won't be any little bits floating around when It's shaken.

I have the parts, but I don't want to keep changing the water. I think I'll drain the water, clean everything, and put them back together dry. I thought using distilled water would be safe, but I guess all the other things inside the globe could have bacteria on them.

You need to boil everything inside including the globe. Also boil the distilled water. You can boil it all in the same pot. If you have something that can't be boiled place it in 99 percent isopropyl alcohol. It can be bought at most lumber yards or paint stores.

Thanks, but that sounds like too much trouble, and I'm afraid that some of the small plastic items would get bent out of shape. I think clear air will be good enough for my purposes. I might try the boiling water with the globes I disassemble, though.

I am wondering if it is oxidation. If bacteria, I suppose all the innards have to be sterilized?

Do snow globes use water? I thought they might use alcohol or something like that.

So, it will not be a snow globe.

Water with a bit of glycerin to slow down the "snow."
