Actually statin drugs decrease chance of cardiac events even if cholesterol and other blood fats are in “ desirable” level, they work by improving blood fats but also by other mechanisms.

Ed, in addition to a statin which reduces the cholesterol your liver produces, I take Zetia (Ezetimibe) which reduces the fat that your gut absorbs. The result is that while I am more careful with my diet, my cholesterol dropped from 325 (!) with a 5:1 LDL to HDL ratio when I had my first “widow maker” MI, to 160 with a 1.5:1 ratio now. My MD had warned me for years it was high, but he didn’t tell me it would kill me. I guess he assumed that I had done as much reading/learning about my body as I did about photography and my other technical hobbies. My bad.

Getting the new Covid booster Wednesday, but waiting a few days for the flu vaccine. Haven’t scheduled the RSV vaccine yet until I hear a bit more about any adverse reactions in a larger population of recipients.

My ratio hasn't been good for a long time. I'll talk to the doc. Zetia.

Thanks again,

Yep, there was actually a statin that was a combination that included zetia (can’t remember the name) that didn’t work well for me so I just add Zetia to my statin regimen. For a long time I took prescription Niacin, which raised my HDL about 10 points, but it can give you hot flashes. As far as statins go, Crestor (Rosuvastatin) seems to be one of the newer, more effective ones

I have been hearing a lot of ads pushing the RSV vaccine, so I contacted my transplant coordinator at Indiana University Health Hospital about getting it.

The reply was to hold off because doctors don't know enough about it at the present time to recommend getting it.

I found that most interesting, considering the ads for it. Needless to say, I won't be getting one anytime soon.

Somehow, I am now sorry that I ever mentioned this.

Well, it made for some good conversation. :)

All wise ones, tell me how we can have a shot for the covid virus in a short period of time and yet we do not have a shot for the common cold virus? I don't get the flu shot and I can't remember the last time I had the flu, I can't remember the last time I had a cold either. What I do if I start to get a scratchy throat is gargle with warm salt water and then maybe take a shot of whiskey or bourbon which will usually clear it up in 24 hours.

There is no "the common cold", it's quite a few minor infections with the same/similar symptoms. Covid may end up like the flu- not too bad for most, but mutates periodically.
My wife gets the flu- cold-like symptoms for a day or so. I get it- three days stinkin in the armchair. My kids wife gets it- 102 fever for over a week and leaks everywhere.
You're lucky.

FDA is supposed to to conduct controlled clinical studies before releasing a drug. Releasing a drug before the trials are complete and all data is evaluated is irresponsible. Kudos to your doctor

I have always had the impression that RSV was a pediatric infection. Adults apparently have natural immunity to it.

ADs be damned.

I notice that, now that everyone is on a statin for cholesterol, we never hear about cholesterol being a harmful chemical. :)

Ed

It is most prevalent in young children and older adults. The young do not have a fully developed immune system and the elderly have less immunity due to some of the systems in the body that help develop immunity not functioning as well as when they were younger.

You left out a key word. Is your transplant coordinator a nurse or a physician. If a nurse, I would suggest you refrain from giving anyone medical advice. A nurse is still a nurse, and not a physician. Their training is significantly different. Many of them, if not all of them, don't know what they don't know. A plumber's assistant is not a master plumber. Be careful where you get important medical advice.

My coordinator works closely in conjunction with my liver doc, so I trust her implicitly. She consults with my doc before giving advice, and I trust her a lot more than tv ads. Their job is to sell, and she and the doc's job is to keep me healthy.

I'm not suggesting you trust TV ads. I'm suggesting you ask your liver doc instead of your coordinator. Your coordinator may have asked your doc or he/she may have thought he/she already knew the answer. First hand information is always preferable.

While I understand the logic, my doctor said the same, if everyone holds off, no one will ever know if it works. Arm was sore at the injection site for a day or two, but didn't notice anything else.

Wait a minute. So if there hasn't been enough testing we should try a new drug in order to provide free clinical trial services for the drug company?

I’ll get one at my next checkup, later this month. I had RSV, many years ago, and it was awful. I don’t want it again.

There’s a stew of viruses brewing this Fall. RSV, flu, and Covid 19 may be had separately, or all at the same time. I don’t want any of them, or pneumonia or shingles or anything else. So I get vaccinated on schedule, and avoid (or reduce the severity of) what comes along.
