I have recently purchased my first mirrorless camera, the Canon r8 and I love the quality of the camera. I am now thinking about returning that and stepping up to either the Canon r6 or r6 mark ll. I already have the lenses and use an adapter and the quality is great. I mostly shoot inside: Head Shots, portraits, family photos, and thinking of maybe getting into senior photography. I see some good deals on the R6 as it is in an older model but with what I’m using it for do I really need to spend the extra $500 on the newer model? This is the first photo I shot with the new camera.

It's not "a step up". You're wasting your time and money worrying about another camera when you just bought the exact model for all your expressed needs. For the R6II comparison, both are 24MP full-frame sensors. Both have multi-angle LCD rear panels. Both capture at 40fps electronically.

The two main features 'missing' from the R8 are a) IBIS and b) a second card slot. If you're shooting a lot of legacy, non-IS enabled lenses, you might argue the R6 models (with IBIS) are a better choice. If you have IS-enabled lenses, nope. The 2nd slot is more relevant for professionals that need a fail-safe for the highly unlikely failure of their primary card. Finally, the older R6 is only a 20MP camera. Never go down in pixel resolution, period. There's a few other differences for people to quibble over, none that justify spending more money to obtain over your current R8.

Thank you for the information, also saves me an extra thousand dollars. The only thing that worries me is about that card slot. I’ve been shooting for years and never had a failed card but you never know.

The UHH community is mostly populated with a bunch of retirees with more time and money than sense. Keeping up with this bunch of Joneses is a fool's errand. If you let the UHH community spend your money, nothing you have will ever be good enough to their standards. You'll have to have 2 cards, even though we can count on one hand the total combined times within the UHH community that a card has failed in a 1-slot body. The longer your read UHH and listen to the expert's ideas on how they'd spend your money, the much more expensive it will get for you.

The R8 is a superb camera.
As far as actual photos you will see no difference with the R6 series.
Do you need IBIS?
2 card slots?
That is your call.
I got a R series camera with IBIS so I had some stabilization with non-IS lenses that I own.

You have new Canon technology in the R8, why do you need another camera?
If money is burning a hole in your pocket buy a really fine lens.
If you just want an R6 because you want it, Go with the R6 II. New Sensor. In my view it rarely pays to buy older digital technology.
Learn your camera, and enjoy it.

I am using the R6M2 and it is a fantastic camera. If you check the features on one versus the other, I think you’ll find that the M2 is worth the extra money. They rearranged some of the physical features which are much better on the newer model, not to mention bumping up the resolution.

Well, I've been shooting for years and I've never had a failed shutter, but you never know.

And, your car can break down, on the way to a job, so I recommend that you also tow a second vehicle, it could happen!!!
(Meant as humor!)

I started dslr’s with a D100 and now I shoot with a Z9, D850, D810, and as a professional photographer who shoots thousands of images a week, I am happy to say that I NEVER had a card failure. user failure, yes, but never a card.
But, that doesn’t stop me from always shooting with two cards, and I will continue too, because like the lottery:
“Hey, you never know”

(FTR: since the Z9, I rarely use the other bodies, and I even gave the D850 to my son in law, because it is time for him to up his game. And as a backup body, for weddings, events, live music, the D810 is just fine. And it also accommodates the few screw drive lenses that I still have)

Returning my new Canon R8 for one major reason, overheating. I took my new camera out and did some outside photography, Mounts Botanical Gardens and then the next day to Wellington Preserve. The first day after one hour the camera had 4-5 red bars and a warning of overheating, I took it into the shade and waited @ 5-10 minutes and finished off my visit. The next day I was out and @ 1 hour twenty minutes the camera warned me it has overheated and is shutting down. I don’t really shoot outside often, but if I do have a photo shoot outside I don’t want to have to worry about the camera just shutting down on me. I’m not quite sure if the canon.R6 Mark ll has the same problem, but now I’m really skeptical about this line of mirrorless cameras.

But what actually constitutes "this line of" EVF cameras ? What would be the common thread as concerns excessive heat generation ? It was a very hot summer but with no problems from my R "mark zero". In the index of my Busch Bible I cannot find any mention of an overheat warning, so Im guessing the old R is not part of "this line of" EVF cameras.

OTOH I did see an EVF Canon on display that appeared to have cooling fan, so Canon is obviously aware that cameras can get really hot. And its not peculiar to only Canons. My newest m4/3 has a fan. Maybe its becoming the "New Normal" as we demand more and faster data processing. (See attached pic.)

Does the R8 card slot access feature this cautionary notice, in FOUR languages ?!?

You don't know how I appreciate your comments to this other amateur photog. I'm in a similar situation. I currently shoot with a Canon 80D and a Canon 90D. I want to move into mirrorless but was stuck wondering if I should go with the R6 or the R6 Mk II. After reading your note, I am going to research the R8. Thanks so much for bringing all the info to the forefront on this issue.

P.S.: Way back when I shot photos with the Canon T1i and later, the T5i, I got great photos with only 15 and 18 megapixels respectively on those older cameras. I knew going with the R6 would be a step backwards in sensor megapixels, but I now realize that I likely should move upward (or stay about equal) with the megapixels particularly if I get some photos enlarged. I positively want the pictures to be good and not fuzzy.

Again, thank you!

You will not regret going with the R6 Mk2, it is a fantastic camera with great still and 4k video capabilities! The auto focus tracking is unbelievable with quite a bit of different options! Also utilizing all your old lenses is possible with the adapter!
