I’m thinking this is a question for the folks at Langley (CIA)
I had one in the '70s on a Nikkormat with a 135. The Navy sent me to Bandar Abbas, Iran for a few days. It is a very small, isolated town that is certainly off limits now. In Iran then, it was considered very bad form to take pictures of people. They felt that photographs stole the soul.
With the right angle lens, I paid no attention to what was actually in front of the camera because I was looking sideways. I will never forget the Iranian man moving towards me from across a narrow street shaking his fist at me. He was not in my viewfinder but thought he was because the camera was pointing at him!
I got some great "candid" photos that are among my best ever "street shots".

Many of them just wear flip flops, so the theft is detected instantaneously.

As a kid, I remember reading an article in a photography magazine that illustrated how to do street photography of people in a clandestine manner- cheap and dirty. It advised painting the cardboard core from toilet paper black and mounting it on the focusing knob of a Rolleiflex TLR, thereby having the lens aimed at 90 degrees. I cou not afford a Rolleiflex at the time so I immediately extracted the toilet roll core (I couldn't wait to use it up) and mounted it, after painting it, on my Yasica-Mat. It works OK, in a manner of speaking. I thought it would be cool to make a "telephoto" version out of a paper towel core but never go around to it!

For the Pentax variety they suggest using a 200mm or 300mm lens.
These are some of the spy lens pictures. Notice they are staring at the American Navy pilot that has a big camera.
Lost my Spiratone version of this mirror. Planning to try to photograph solar eclipses in Texas next month and next April It would by handy since sun near zenith and my best camera has fixed screen, neck also pretty fixed at 83

Another technique I have used to shoot street photos without people knowing I was photographing them - use a wide angle and compose with the subject off center. It looks to them like you are shooting something beyond them.

I wanted one of those as a teen to get discreet bikini shots from the boardwalk.
