Does anyone know what I might have inadvertently done to cause a virtual copy to appear with almost all of my photos in LR Classic, the newest version? Running on Windows 10. Many thanks.

No, there are both processed and unprocessed files with copies. There are even psd's that have them!

I had the same issue. The culprit is lightroom in the cloud. If you back up your collections to lightroom, it, somehow, downloads the images again to your computer, therefore duplicating them. Either, do not create collections, or don't back them to the cloud and you'll be fine.

One more thing. All the copies will have a small white square in the right upper corner when you look at the grid view. Just select them all and delete.

Do you need to have a lot of photos in collections? I only have a few because I stuck to my folder organization system. I do back up to Lightroom for my iPhone photos, though
Thanks for the tip about removing them in the grid view. I’ve been going one by one through many folders and just got tired of doing that so that’s why I am here with you all on the hedgehog. Thank you.

It's one of those wonderful Windows problems. You can, with just the wrong couple of keystrokes, make copies of one, several, or all the files in a folder. If you were not in the folder prior to noticing this, then I don't know.

One possibility: If you accidentally Select All in grid view, then do a Create Virtual Copy, thinking you were making only one VC.

Thanks, but there's no chance that ever happened! I just went back to my 2017 files when I first started using LR and had no idea there was such a thing as a virtual copy, and I found about 300 virtual copies in the first few folders there that I removed, of course!! Many frames had 2 of them! I'm going to have so much room on my hd, even though I know that vc's don't take up very much room.

Thanks for trying.

Could you please described HOW you get your photos from your iPhone into Lightroom. I should do that but only back up to the iCloud for now because I don’t know the best way.

The way I do it is probably not the best way! I figured it out myself, and so there are probably other ways that are more direct but here’s what I do.
The photos appear in Internet Explorer, the little file folder icon. I create a new folder and name it. I drag all the images into it, according to the title I gave it, such as Amelia‘s birthday party. My images are organized into years, so I drag that little folder into 2023. Then I open Lightroom and click Import and go through the usual process.
Like I said, I’m sure there must be simpler ways, but this one works for me.

It’s going to be a long process, I know. As I watched one of the football games last night, I sat there and worked on removing them, one at a time, and didn’t even make a dent. I surely hope someone will come to my aid here. Sorry you couldn’t help.
