If you get a bunch in your yard, they eat everything. When they are young they are black. I have used them to catch fish. If you get a bunch eating your plants, you can hear them chewing. They are an unwelcome pest.

Beautiful grasshopper/great catch. My ID says it's an Eastern Lubber Grasshopper.
