Do you understand that criticism is due to your lack of sensible responses.

You want people to "just help" but you don't even make the effort to undertake such basics as using the 'Quote Reply' function. You are asked specific questions but provide no answers.

You make it very hard to help you but not asking complete questions and not providing all the pertinent information. Now you’re ending what look like statements with a question mark. Are the statements or questions? And if the are supposed to be questions they make no sense.

OK. Back to your question. This is an older unit, so it's possible that it has been on the shelf too long and the main capacitor has failed. There is a low probability that someone might be able to repair, if that is the case. But there are a couple of things you can do. Make sure that the camera is not set to the "green dot automatic" mode.

1. Remove the flash, See if the flip-up flash works. If not, it is unlikely that an external flash will work, either.
2. Put fresh batteries in the flash, put it on your camera, and turn both on. Let it all sit for 30 minutes.
3. Push the test button and see if the flash will fire. If so, continue.
4. If so, release the shutter on your camera and see if the flash fires. If so great.
5. If not, check the flash menu in your camera to see if any of the settings would keep the flash from working.

The three most likely problems are a camera setting, a bad capacitor, or earlier damage to the camera by an old flash with too high a trigger voltage.

From what I have read the SB-400 does not have a flash test button.

Another thing for your list is to place a good set of batteries in the SB-400 and see if the 'Ready' light comes on.

Yes use the SB700 on the camera and see if it works. If it does then the problem is with the flash. If it doesn't then the problem is with the camera.

Have you already tried the suggestions you have gotten so far? What were the results/ Also clarify if you have both the 400 and 700 flashes, or whether you are unsure what model you have. We can't help you if you won't respond to suggestions.

That may be correct. I have two of them, but they're not with me right now.

Are you using top brand batteries, such as Duracell? I had that problem once with my SB800. I took it in for repair and turned out I had put in low quality batteries !

You seem to think this is fun? You'd write better questions and / or better responses otherwise. On your thread about a problem camera, you'd post an example image. Instead, we're all left thinking you're doing these posts on purpose. And, you get the responses we all think you deserve and seek.

I'm beginning to wonder if Carl is just a troll having a laugh at those trying to help him. He won't take advice given him, he won't answer questions, and then complains nobody will help him.

You are sure right about the capacitors needing to be used every week. Just turn it on and blast it a few times. Should do every week or two.
