I have used all versions of the 24-120 on both crop and FF, I have also owned the 28-300 for a short time. I found the 28-300 to be simply too large and I value the 24mm end more than the 300 thus I actually traded it in for the 24-120 f4.

First, thanks for the quick response and thanks for sharing your experience with both lenses. I think I'll be purchasing the 24-120mm.
I like my 24-120. It's not light, but convenient and I'm happy with my results. "your mileage may vary"
PS, if you have a crop body, the DX 16-80 is lightweight. Lots of them for sale now with the switch to MILC.

I think the perception of how good the 28 -300 lens is will depend on the camera. I was reasonably happy with the 18 to 300 on my d500 that i used as my walk around; so I bought the 28 -300 to go with my new D850 and was disappointed with the resulting shots not being sharp. I later read professionals that said the 28 -300 was great until they upgraded to the D850.
I think 47 megapixels needs better glass where the 24. mp on the d780 or the d800 at 36 mp will do fine.
Please dont be just another sucker for that BS, the "lenses for sensors" mythology. Obviously, you have no idea how little difference there is between 36 and 47MP, or you would never be parroting such garbage.
When Hawgsters cite what they read or heard "from professionals" thaz nearly always a red flag warning of misinformation. I never cease to be amazed by the crap that "pros" believe. Thaz by my direct observation of my "peers".
First and foremost A. T. thank you for your service as a Houston Firefighter... have a colleague with the same career path... I'm humbled at their incredible dedication to those they serve... You are truly a hero in the eyes of your community...
In light of this career service I'm going to offer you guidance from one who actually deployed the AF-S 28-300mm f/3.5-5.6G VR Nikkor (a true Swiss Army Knife) on commercial assignments. Sadly others in this thread who ridiculed this Nikkor likely in order to appear as a connoisseur of "
fine optical glass... yet they post no documentation of same... Nor do they even post images that they "claim" were even taken with this Super Zoom.
I've shot this lens on my Nikon D3, D3x, D800e and D810 and it works extremely well within the range DxOMark has documented (70-120mm). So please start here A.J.

I suggest you do an analysis of the shots you have taken with the 28-300. Specifically the # of shots at different focal lengths. Should be easy based on your PP software.
I did this exercise when deciding whether to purchase the 24-200 or keeping my 28-300 for my Z6 at the time. I wanted to transition to a Z lens if it made sense.
It turns out that I had a minimal # of shots kept at 200-300. So I went with the 24-200 and sold the 28-300.
I did the same evaluation when the Z 24-120 came out. But I have a significant % in the 120-200 range.
Therefore, I have not purchased the Z24-120.
While there are quality differences, they are not significant for my needs.
I suggest you do an analysis of the shots you have... (

Okay, good information I'll do that, thanks.

Good to know.....I just ordered the 24-120, thanks.
I've got the Nikon18 - 300 and it never leaves my camera. Fantastic lens, copes with everything. Very highly recommended. Just saying..........
