For those of you who "claim" Chump was good for this country.

In the end, the former president’s policies were mostly rhetoric.

While Donald Trump may have promised an industrial resurgence as he entered office four years ago, he failed to revive American factories. As we swiftly and gratefully close the book on the Trump years, it’s important to understand that his grandiose rhetoric and erratic policies on trade and manufacturing didn’t usher in a new era of prosperity for factory towns. Many are in fact worse off than when he entered office.

There are fewer people working in manufacturing today than when Trump became president in 2017. That’s remarkable because factory jobs generally grew year-over-year from 2010 to 2018. In the last four years of Obama’s presidency alone, 386,000 manufacturing jobs were added. Throughout Obama’s time in office, Trump repeatedly criticized him for betraying American manufacturing. But Trump made matters worse in many ways.

Trump’s failure to establish a competitive dollar or to leverage tariffs for real change had already weakened factory job growth heading into the Covid-19 pandemic; his disastrous stewardship of the government’s pandemic response and its sputtering attempt at an economic recovery contributed to a steep drop of 543,000 jobs in manufacturing since February 2020. Few (if any) major global economies matched Trump’s futility through the end of 2020. And before anyone jumps to Trump’s defense by claiming it was the pandemic and lockdown that caused this job loss, it’s clear that his denial of the severity of the pandemic and scattershot response made things far worse than they needed to be.

As a candidate, Trump often railed about the size of the U.S. trade deficit. Yet he’s somehow managed to make it worse. In no year of the Trump administration was the trade deficit lower than in any of the eight years of the Obama administration. The highest three annual goods trade deficits on record in U.S. history are 2018, 2019 and (once figures are finalized) 2020. Those all came under Trump’s watch.

During the first week of his administration, Trump promised to make sure energy pipelines were made of American iron and steel. But he never followed through, and workers lost jobs in pipe and tube mills.

One of Trump’s biggest manufacturing “wins” — a promise extracted from Foxconn to build a massive new manufacturing facility in Wisconsin that would employ more than ten thousand workers—has turned out to a glorified warehouse that will likely never fulfill its promise.

And his “Buy American, Hire American” executive orders were full of language like “encourage” rather than “shall,” making them far too process-oriented to be effective.

• Manufacturing jobs have increased under President Joe Biden. But the increase began under his predecessor, Donald Trump, and is because of policies enacted by both of them.

• Despite the recent gains, the number of manufacturing jobs has declined by about one-third since 1979, while the workforce as a whole has increased by 57%. Automation and globalization are key reasons why manufacturing now makes up a smaller piece of the jobs pie.

• Experts do not expect the U.S. manufacturing employment level to reach its levels from the 1950s to the 1970s, given today’s far different international economic landscape.

Directly from the Bureau of Labor Statistics.

As usual, when discussing anything with you, a childlike explanation is required.

Notice the numbers at the bottom of the chart? They represent January of every year 2013 through 2023.
See the numbers on the left, indicating the number of jobs? That number represents jobs in the thousands.

See the red line growing "steadily" upward during the Obama years? That indicates the number of manufacturing jobs was steadily growing while Obama was in office.
See the red line peak, flat-line and then "DROP" under Chump? That indicates that Chump LIED and did NOTHING to enhance the number of manufacturing jobs in the USA. Remember his campaign promise(s)?

Notice the number above 1/23 is actually higher than that which is above 1/17 - 1/20?

https://data.bls.gov/timeseries/CES3000000001

These are not my numbers.

But, as we all know... according to the lying, corrupt right-wingers here in the Attic, EVERYONE and EVERY government agency is lying, telling the left a bunch of BS. The lying, corrupt right-wingers are just too smart to fall for that BS.

Where DO you get your information from?....

And... Oh, by the way... Deflecting to covid has NOTHING to do with this post.

Doesn't your trend show that things have only marginally improved over the pre-covid Trump era?

Really?

During covid, manufacturing jobs dropped like a lead balloon... down below 11,000.
It came back up "marginally" after that.
It grew at a steady rate until this year yet, it grew MORE than when the fuhrer was in office.

I would say that it could be better and hope it does get better but, one of the contributing factors today is that other countries are entering the field and they have become competitive with those who were leaders in the past.

One of the other contributors to this "marginal improvement" is that other countries no longer want to do business with a country that is so full of hate and bias towards its own people.

My God you are truly illiterate. Of course it went down during covid because of the democrat-led shutdowns. The shutdown's pretty much continued till after Trump left office. It's kind of like Joe Biden lying about him creating 10 million jobs which was a b******* lie.

In my mind, you draw a straight line from the peak before the covid dip over to the upper trend associated with Biden. Biden can only get credit for that increase, the rest is recovery. This looks like an increase of 250K manufacturing jobs.

That is an incorrect assumption on your part. I’m pretty sure everyone understands recovery would come about.

None the less, the current administration will get credit for doing what chump couldn’t do.

Using your numbers… 250k new jobs is not enough to say some policies ARE working?

You're not making any sense. If everyone understood that recovery was going to come about, then you can't take credit for the recovery. Manufacturing jobs, as others have pointed out, are ony a portion of new and existing jobs.

The US population is ever increasing and many people are working longer before they retire. If the economy is not making new jobs, it's not keeping even. Unemployment numbers don't tell the story either. For years the unemployment numbers have been cooked to improve that metric. That's not a pure Republican or Democratic issue, just an issue of politicians in general being honest about the economy.

Biden's economy will be graded by the voters next November...if he lives that long.

No one is giving anyone "credit for the recovery" here.

It seems you simply want to nit-pick the FACT that Chump didn't deliver on his promises... i.e. to bring manufacturing back into this country.

Stupidity described those who don't realize that presidential policies create the environment for job creation.
