"Access Denied" - how do I fix

For Apple M1 users.....
When changing computers (from an old Dell), I've lost my ability to post an avatar on Ugly Hedgehog. I have likely set an ad blocker, but can't find where I've done that. Can someone who is currently using one of the new Apple machines suggest where I should check to adjust my settings.

Thanks so much.

I moved to an M1 from an old dell and didn't have any problems but I haven't tried to change my avatar.

I assume you have an avatar as an image file somewhere accessible and are trying to load it through your profile on UHH.

In finder, right click on the avatar file and choose 'Get Info' and look at the permissions at the bottom of the dialog.

Can you describe how you are trying to set your new avatar?

Using Safari?

In addition to explaining the steps you're trying, if you include a screenshot showing the "access denied" message you're getting when you try to post the avatar, that might help others help you more. New Apple machines/systems have a lot more "protections" involving permissions settings. With my new Studio, I've had to tinker with permissions more than I ever have before. It's seems extra particular about things that are stored on external disks and that's where all my photos live. I had it all sorted, but had to redo some of it when I installed new versions of LR/PS.

Yes, using Safari (have tried with Firefox too, with the same result.

The intended avatar is a jpg on an internal M1 MacBook drive. When I choose the avatar, it shows as the chosen file, until I hit "Upload Avatar," at which time I get the "Access denied" message.

The permissions shown with the avatar give read / write permissions to all three categories. I have tried with various images.

My question is "where do I look in the MacBook's settings to disable the apparent adblocker, for uglyhedgehog?"

This is not a life-changing event, but obviously many members have accomplished what I have not.

Thoughts?

Access Denied

"Avatar updates are disabled for your account. This is most likely because you use an ad blocker. We understand that ads are sometimes annoying. But ads are what pays the costs of running our forum. You can continue using our forum with limited functionality. Alternatively, you can disable your ad blocker while using our forum by whitelisting our website in your ad blocker's settings, which we would appreciate as it would help us cover our costs. In which case, your full account functionality will be restored within a few days. It's done automatically. If this is a mistake and you don't use an ad blocker, then please contact the administration and we'll look into it.

If you have an adblocker you might try whitelisting UHH. If it works, you can take off the whitelist after uploading the avatar.

Open UHH in Safari and click on Safari on the top menu and look for 'Settings for uglyhedgehog.com'. There is a checkbox for content blocking. Try unchecking that.

Open Safari, then on the top menu click on Safari and choose settings. Then go to the extensions tab and see if there's an adblocker listed. I don't recall installing an adblocker on Safari but my MacBook has an adblocker listed (that could easily be due to my aging memory). On the top menu click on 'Safari Extensions'. It will open the store to show you what extensions are available. If you have an adblocker it should be listed, but it will say 'open' instead of 'get'. If you open that it will allow you to whitelist a website. Click on 'Manage' and eventually you will get to a page where you can enter a URL to be whitelisted.

Thanks for your suggestion. No adblocker found. I'll keep up the search, using your suggestion as a push in the right direction.

I'm going through the same problem. Whitelisted UHH, nothing ! Checked for Ad blocker, nothing. So I just gave up !

I hoped that one of the frequent posters who have avatars and are very knowledgeable regarding the Apple operating system would offer advice, but since this question has been moved out of the photography section, they may never see it.

You might try reducing the size of the avatar file. Avatars are small so something around 100-200 pixels on a side would be enough. Don’t know if UHH will reject something too large.

Otherwise it may be time to contact admin. He does pay attention and knows the system.

If this avatar comes through, you have solved my problem. Thanks so much. I may experiment a bit, but this version seems to work. When all else fails.........
